August 6, 2018 (Original) Review:

When Wade Odell Wade couldn't (or wouldn't) move us, they pushed us off to ShipSmart who made everything sound like sunshine and rainbows when they were selling my mom on their company. They told my mom that the move would take 2-4 weeks. It has now been over five weeks since ShipSmart's subcontractor picked up our belongings and we don't have anything. My mom called ShipSmart for an update and the representative she spoke with told her the warehouse they subcontracted to wasn't open, but that he would call her first thing the next business day morning. He never called.

My mom called back and got Mitch who told us that he did not have an update on our move, but would contact the warehouse and find out what's going on. He called back the next day to tell us that the warehouse would be palletizing our belongings and ShipSmart's Operations Department would have an update on July 27th. We've heard nothing.

We called back and Mitch said that they would be palletizing our belongings and would provide an update, which sounded familiar and is now, clearly, an empty promise that this company makes to get customers off the phone. We told Mitch that we had to buy beds, among other things, because ShipSmart took so long to deliver and asked if they could pull the beds out of the shipment and give them to someone if someone needs them. After telling us the shipment had not been palletized yet, Mitch wanted to charge us over $100 to remove the mattresses because the shipment had been palletized. Needless to say, after the lack of communication and contradictions in communications like that one, I no longer have any trust in this company.

Given my experience, I am not surprised to find awful reviews of ShipSmart online and to find that ShipSmart was sued in 2010. I really hope we just get all of our belongings undamaged because, although I'm sure I currently have a legal claim for the length of time they've taken and the thousands of dollars I'm out buying replacement items for my belongings that should already be here, I - ultimately - want my belongings. And, I want to be the customer of a company who cares about more than the money their customers represent, which ShipSmart - obviously - doesn't.

Save yourself the heartache we're dealing with and use another mover or shipper. ShipSmart does not deliver when promised (if ever... we'll see); ShipSmart does not communicate adequately with their customers; ShipSmart does not keep their promises. This is not a way to run a business and this is not a way to treat paying customers.

I'll update this review when we get (or don't get) our belongings and I'll let you know if ShipSmart makes us whole for the delay and, possibly, for the loss of our belongings (I really hope they haven't lost our shipment because the replaceable items will cost money to replace and some of it is irreplaceable).

My mom has been a Registered Nurse for 42 years and would never treat a patient like this company has treated us. If she did, the consequences could be dire. I'm an Attorney and I would never treat my clients the way this company has treated us. What a shame.

August 30, 2018 (Updated) Review:

This is an update to my August 6, 2018 review of Ship Smart.

After weeks of my mother and I trying to get someone at Ship Smart to give us answers, an Operations Manager (Ana) called me after I posted my review of Ship Smart.  Customers should not have to write a negative review of a company to get the service they paid for, but it looks like others have had a similar experiences based on reviews I’ve read across the internet.

While Ana was pleasant in speaking to us, Ship Smart wanted to charge us almost double what they quoted us.  Ana told me this on August 6, 2018.  At that point, it had been five (5) weeks and two (2) days and we still didn’t have our belongings or a date for when it would be delivered.

Spoiler alert: we got our stuff seven (7) weeks and two (2) days after the warehouse Ship Smart subcontracts to picked up our belongings in New Jersey.

Anyway, back to August 6th when I told Ana that there was no way I was going to pay almost double for our belongings.  She called back to tell me that I would have to pay $900.00 over what I was quoted.  I agreed because they had my belongings held hostage and I wanted my property.  It sounds, from others’ reviews, like charging way more than quoted once their subcontractor has the customer’s belongings is Ship Smart’s modus operandi.

I told Ana that I was concerned that our stuff was lost and she assured me it wasn’t.  What she left out is that it was damaged.  It finally arrived seven (7) weeks and two (2) days after it was picked up.  It turns out Ship Smart’s subcontractor took it from New Jersey to Long Island and had it there for over six (6) weeks, then it went to another subcontractor of Ship Smart’s in Largo, Florida for about a week, then to our home.

It arrived on August 20, 2018, so we still have not finished going through everything because it’s mentally challenging to see our damaged items.  We need breaks from it.  The pictures show just some of it.  I have more photos and videos of the damage and I’m sure (and sad to report that) I’ll have more photos of damage when we finish unpacking everything.

The bedroom sets that were damaged cannot be replaced without buying a whole new set because part of their beauty and usefulness is that they match.  Both my mom’s and my set are damaged and arrived filthy.  Multiple rounds of cleaning yielded black dirt (I guess dirt?) results.  I documented some of this with pictures of the filth we cleaned off.

We have a table that is damaged beyond repair.  The tabletop swivels (it’s not supposed to) and is wobbly, so it is no longer usable as a table.  Additionally, it has scratches on it.  It’s a loss.

Our TVs are filthy and may be scratched.  We don’t know yet because Ship Smart’s subcontractor put the wires/plugs and remote controls to the TVs in box(es) without clearly marking them or instead of attaching them to the TVs they belong to.  Thus, we cannot plug in or use our TVs until we get to the box with the plugs and remote controls in it.

There’s a box that’s marked (by Ship Smart’s subcontractor) that I need it ASAP because it has a multi-functional device (MFD) and shredder that I need for work.  Nonetheless, I didn’t get it “ASAP” or even close to when promised.  Obviously, I could not wait seven (7) weeks and two (2) days for my MFD, thus, I had to buy a new one.  (I also had to buy a new TV and beds, among other items).  I was able to get by without my shredder, but I now have hours/days/months of work to shred everything I’ve scanned.

This is not to mention the time I’ve spent on this matter.  If I billed Ship Smart for my (and my mother’s) time, they would owe us thousands of dollars.

Speaking of money, I paid Ship Smart half of what they wanted to charge me (and they didn’t deserve that) and they’ve been hounding me for the other half.  They can certainly get in touch with me when they want money, but they were missing in action when I was trying to get updates on where my belongings were.

Given the damage to my belongings, I’m not giving them another dime and I expect a full refund of what I already paid to them plus compensation for what I’ve lost due to their and their subcontractors’ negligence in handling my belongings.

As I stated in my previous review, I’m not surprised to see that they were sued in 2010.  I am surprised that they have not been sued since given the class of people who have similar claims against them based on everything I’m reading on the internet.  After dealing with this company, I truly believe this is a scam and I feel sorry for my mom, myself, AND all others who have been victims of this fraud.

You're Not Going to Get A Refund

AUTHOR: Jim - (United States)

POSTED: Thursday, August 30, 2018

This is way too long of a review for me to comment on every single aspect of it, but after the United Rep told you that there was no way they would be able to make the delivery by the date you needed to, you should have really done this move yourself.  This is a mover's busy season and many movers simply aren't going to be able to make the delivery windows you need.  So they sent you over to ShipSmart.  I mean they're OK, but I would have done the move myself if there was a time crunch, as you indicated.  The general rule of thumb is if a legit mover like WOW with all of the other agents United has at their disposal and could not move you within the move window you needed, then moving yourself is the next best option.

As far as refunds...you should familiarize yourself with the Carmack Amendment.  The Carmack Amendment pretty much rules out any ability you would have as an attorney to collect anything more than what is in your contract - this law is designed specifically to protect interstate movers in court actions by consumers.  If they had been sued in the past (and I'm sure many movers have), then most of those cases get dismissed as a result of Carmack.  Under Carmack, you can not collect on such actions as fraud, negligence, additional costs related to having to purchase new equipment or hotel stays, etc... from a mover.

It's one of those laws that when a mover brings it up in court, then it results in summary judgment against the plaintiff.  Now, your BOL will indicate whether you have FRV or whether they'll reimburse at $0.60 per pound.  If it's the former, subject to a deductible, they will compensate you for the damage.  They may also provide a small rebate for the late delivery, but they may not either.  If it were off-season - a late delivery rebate (a small amount) would be probable.  Less so in July and August.  Those payments are strictly out of courtesy - there is no obligation for them to provide it.

Bets of luck to you....
