I signed up for Simple because of the simple unlimited everything plan.  It worked most of the time but there were a few continual complaints:

  • no tracking of data, texts, or minutes used
  • no usability outside US
  • occasional brief lapses in services (~5 times in 2 years)
  • 3 times, they lost my automatic payment information (which then automatically cut off my service at the re-up time since it wasn’t paid)

However, the reason to avoid this company at all costs was when I decided to leave.  I asked to port my number into my new T-Mobile account so T-Mobile forwarded the request to Simple.  After my Simple service was cut off, I complained to T-Mobile for 36 hours about the delays in getting my new service set up.  Eventually they figured out that Simple had not released the number (T-Mobile's only fault in the process was taking 36 hours to figure out that Simple was causing the problem).

When I called Simple about the problem, the rep told me it was their policy to disable service as soon as possible when they get a request to transfer and then wait 24 to 48 hours before releasing the number so the new service can be set up.  When I restated that this is intentionally disrupting service and causing problems for customers, he responded that people who leave are no longer customers and if they want their service to not be disrupted, then they shouldn't try to transfer it.  This customer service attitude should never be acceptable.

First, according to the FCC, the carriers can not refuse to allow me to keep my number simply because I chose a different carrier.  This is not a courtesy.  It is simply them following the law (in this case while intentionally disrupting service).

Second, having switched carriers several times, I know from personal experience that in every past case, after the old service shut down, the number was avaialble on the new service by the time I changed the SIM card.  Whether this was within an hour or within 72 hours couldn't matter to me less.  The fact is that no other switch has left our number disabled while they intentionally delayed the transfer.

As a individual who has to deal with cellphones and the carriers, I can tell you that 24 to 72 hours is the industry STANDARD for porting in a number. Once you call to have your number ported, its not tied to ANY account. Which means that you may be mad that it takes that long but there is NOTHING that can be done to speed it up. Once the number is "free" of whichever account it is on then it can be ported. This is not just a simple matter of hitting one button and its done. The number has to be removed from thier database completly then its available to port. You have to take into consideration that YOU are not the only person switching services during that time. You will just have to be patient and let the process finish.

And FYI...they DO NOT have to give you YOUR number. They can play hardball. YOU DO NOT OWN THAT NUMBER!! It is done as a courtesy and nothing more. There is NO LAW that states they have to give you the same number or release the same number to a different company for you.
