After calling a few moving companies, my husband decided to book "Smooth Movers" moving company to help us move items from our 3,600 square foot home. My husband had spoken with a man named Sterling who sounded very nice and my husband wanted to help out a small business owner from his home area.

My husband gave Sterling the details of the size of our home and descriptions of the number of bigger items in our home. Sterling said it sounded like a two-man job that should take 6 hours. My husband questioned Sterling about the number of men, but Sterling was confident that two people would be plenty. The quoted price per hour for two men was $90 per hour. My husband budgeted $800 just in case things ran a little longer than expected. Just a side note...we have used movers three other times in the past and each time the maximum time taken under six hours.

Two men arrived at 9 am the morning of the move. My mother and I got busy loading our vehicles with clothes from each of the four bedrooms....the movers would not be responsible for moving the closets. My husband got busy dismantling all items that needed to be taken apart...the movers would not have to dismantle anything. The only thing the movers had to do was literally load the truck. We also took care of emptying each freezer and refrigerator of its items....the movers would not have to empty anything.

After 8 hours, and one truck load, it was obvious that there was still a significant amount of work needing to be done. A little side note: earlier in the day my husband overheard the guys discussing the fact that they didn't have a job the following day and so they could just come back the next day.

After unloading the first load, the movers went to grab something to eat. An hour later they called to say that they would just have to come back the next day to complete the job. In hindsight we should have ended things right there, but we felt too deeply involved to even consider that. We were also in a state of shock at how awfully things were going.

The following day was pretty much the same as the first. Items were getting scratched and dented; labeled boxes were placed randomly throughout the house; and items were found broken in boxes.

After another 8 hours and one and a half truckloads, they finally finished and gave us a bill of $1300 and change. My husband, not wanting to cause a scene, gave the men a check with the intention that he would call Sterling the following day to discuss things. Sterling merely replied "Oh well" and refused to discuss the matter further.
