I have been a client of State Farm for over 30 years. I insure four autos, two homes and fine art.  I have never had a major claim that I can recall.  At a time of great need, I was left hanging on technicalities.  I lost my home.  There are two stages to the saga.  As we went about a remodel of the home, we discoverd a squirrel infestation.  They destroyed about five walls, wiring, and insulation.  I called State Farm  Claim was denyed in its entirety because "squirrels are rodents".  Okay, seems odd, but I will accept that.  As we proceeded, we found the foundation was compromised.  This was a much larger issue since home is in the mountains and on a slope.

The foundation was so compromised, it was determned that it was not worth trying to repair. OMG, I have lost my house.  Went back to State Farm.   "Not covered."  Why?  Foundation related and because it "may" have been due to earth movement.  Huh?  I lose my house, have a need to rebild entirely and State Farm, after being a customer for over 30 years, says I'm not elible for one nickle.  Thank you, good sirs.  Well, now we know what you are all about.  Buyer's beware.  Read your policies carefully.  It's all about the money and State Farm is anything but a "good neighbor" because good neighbors would not leave you out in the cold!

Technicality and, At a Minimum, Misleading

AUTHOR: Garry - ()

POSTED: Friday, September 13, 2013

In repsonse to "Capt. Obvious'" comment to my report, who really may work for an insurance company or just doesn't like the idea that someone has two houses, thank you both for your empathy for my loss and for repeating what I already said.  If you read my piece again, you will note that I acknowledge  that I'm not covered. I know that now - the hard way.  But many who do not read every line or the fine print of their policies (the vast majority of us) might want to know their true exposure.  I was hoping the reader would benefit from knowing.  Morevoer, is it really right?  Yes, I've read the policy - probably the one you helped to write.  It's in the finest of fine print.  I guess you are smarter than most.

I think what you would find is that the vast majority of folks who have home policies with State Farm have no idea of these exclusions and are being given a false sense of security - thinking they are covered from a total loss, when, in fact,  they are NOT.  Everyone who has learned of my loss is completely shocked.  We evidently aren't as smart as you.  I thought the reader of this report just might want to know.  If your loss can be tied, directly or indirectly, to Mother Nature or the foundation, you are simply out of luck.  Too bad you didn't read the fine print.  When I inquired if going forward if I could obtain this coverage, State Farm said "yes", for an additional premium, of course.  But when you go to read the language (I read it all now) of the additional rider, its highly questionable what would actually be covered for anything.

At a mninimum it is misleading.  So, "Mr. I Don't Work for an Insurance Company" or Counselor, I appreciate your advice and empathy over my loss.  I realize I can't win in court or I would be there.  I still don't think this is right.  And, if you were sitting whre I was, you might look at the situation a little differently.  Thank you.

"..good neighbors would not leave you out in the cold!"

How are you "out in the cold" if, as you say, own TWO homes?

Also, what does your WRITTEN policy say about what is and is not covered?

If they are violating the terms of the policy, you can refer the matter to your state's insurance commissioner  and the BBB.

If, as I suspect, your problems AREN'T covered in your policy, that's on you, not them, no matter how many years you have been a client.

BTW, have you even read your policy yet?

No I don't work for them and don't have insurance with them.
