1. It appears Stephen Turner was kicked out of his own law firm by vote--Carlson Messer & Turner, www.cmtlaw.com, after he spent $150,000 defending a debt collection case.
2. It appears that although Stephen Turner won at trial, he lost the appeal thus leaving his client with a large judgment to frame on a wall, but not a cent in his client's pocket. See, www.ca9.uscourts.gov/datastore/opinions/2009/06/.../07-55326.pdf In all reality, who do you think won that case, the plaintiff, who spent nothing more than gas driving to court to testify, or the defense, who won the trial, but lost $150,000 defending the case? Plus, the above case is now a published opinion that will assist other consumer law attorneys who are fearful about letters threatening to hold the law firm accountable for defense costs, can now rely on the above case to discard such letters since an attorney cannot be held liable under the Fair Debt Practices Act for defense costs. Of course, the individual debtor can---however if the debtor is already broke and in debt colleciton---does it really matter?
3. What's unusual is that, in my opinion, the true rip off was the attorney for Midland Credit Management billed his client to defend his client for a remarkable sum of money.
4. What's not unusual is that Stephen Turner has a history of losing cases and it appears he lost the wrong case and spent far too much money defending the above case.
