I began talking off aned on to Stevens Transport when they did a job drive at the Work Source here in Houston about two weeks ago. I spoke with a recruiter named Alfredo [friendly] whom I explained I had two recent years experience, am a good driver, and some backgound info. I submitted the pre-app and he even called me after I left for additional information.

As instructed, I called Leslie [friendly] after the next one or two business days. She had a hard time finding it because the recruiter disqualified it without letting me know. When I questioned why my application was denied--she was unable to tell me and transferred me to a lady named Shirley.

Shirley [friendly] tried to bring my pre-app back to life and I faxed background ppwk to her directly. She then needed my military DD-214 from the last time I served. I had relocated down here from another state without it so I offered an older DD-214 until I could send the most recent copy.

Well, they couldn't get me up to Dallas for orientation unless I provided the most recent DD-214. So, Shirley advised me to call once I got it. I had already requested additional DD-214s from the military.

After about six or seven days, the military called me to say that they could fax me what's called a statement of service (with official letterhead) while I'm waiting for the DD-214. The person advised that it should appease the employer because it shows all periods of service, honorable discharge, and especially the most recent time I served. So, I faxed it to Shirley and she was finishing up my application and had already called my previous employers and references.

Before they could send me to orientation, she wanted me to speak to a guy from orientation named Dennis Patterson [unprofessional]. Dennis had me on the phone foir over twelve minutes interrogating me on the same things Shirley had already covered. He gave me the third degree about my background and why I had to change companies after relocating.

Even though it was he who was tying me up asking me questions that were already covered-- he had the audacity to do a play-by-play on what I told him and tell me "we've been on the phone here for 8 minutes 23 seconds and you still haven't explained to me why Swift terminated you when you were on F.M.L.A. after 2 years of employment". After I straightened that out with him I advised I sent a statement of military service to Shirley.

Dennis then transferred me to someone else. This was maybe on Friday the 14th. I was unable to get an acceptance answer for orientation.

On Monday morning I spoke with Leslie and she told me to call back a few hours later when Dennis arrived because my pre-app was locked in his office over weekend. So, I called back at the time she said. She said they were working on my app still and needed me to call back at another specific time but would have an answer for me that day.

When I called again around 3p.m., Leslie wasn't available so I spoke to Shirley. Shirley said she was still running my app thru for approval, verified my tel#, and said she would call me back at a specific time. I waited... and no call back.

Finally, I called her back and she might've put me on hold once or twice while she consulted. She told that Dennis was still wanting the actual DD-214 before hiring me. This was a slap in the face because he didn't tell me that on Friday... and they strung me along for a week and a half.

I gave up and I spoke frankly to Shirley. I told her Stevens has a lousy hiring/application process and how rude and unsophisticated Dennis was on Friday. She listened and agreed with everything I said to my great surprise.

I basically told them when I first started talking to Stevens to please let me know yay or nay if you're gonna hire me. It's not that difficult. Don't waste my time with games.

I was, of course, talking to other employers but Stevens Transport is the worst application process I've ever been through. Make sure you have all your paperwork before wasting time with these jokers.

#3 UPDATE EX-employee responds

Very Similar Experience

AUTHOR: PatrickinNW - (United States of America)

POSTED: Monday, January 11, 2010

I can completely relate to the experience you have had with Stevens transport and have even filed my own complaint against them on Ripoff report. I am a experienced OTR driver with 8yrs exp. in Reffer, Dry Van and Flatbed. In early 2008 both me and my wife contacted Stevens transport because she was interested in running team with me and the company I worked for didn't hire students and didn't run teams. I made it clear to Leslie that I would not be traveling to Dallas nor would I resign from my job unless they had run all my background reports DAC, Drug test results, DMV, etc and was cleared in every way possible to become a Stevens transport driver (short of a driving test). After riding a bus 2 days to get to Dallas, which I will never agree to ever again, taking and passing a driving test on the first day I was there, Sunday, I was forced to sit in a class for 4 long days listening to what the other 100 people in the class were going to do with their trainers and teaching them how to find truck stops instead of hearing anything about how the company actually ran. When I finally threatened to leave because I wasn't making any money in the classroom I was brought into Dennis Paterson's office. Where he informed me that they needed time to run all necessary background checks on me. I immediately asked what they had done for the past 4 days plus the 3 weeks before I came there. After confronting Leslie shortly there after I was asked not to ask her anymore questions directly because another driver a few years previous had pulled a gun on her. I could empathize with that driver because here I had quit a good paying driving job rode the bus 2 days and they couldn't do simple paperwork. Later on that day I was again summoned into Dennis Paterson's office, where I was told that they were waiting on my drug test results and would need to contact my previous 10 yrs employers to get that info. I promptly pointed to the list of drug test results on mine on his desk. He then said he was waiting on my Dac report. Again I pointed directly to it on his desk and informed him this was not my first rodeo. He then proceeded to ask me what infraction I had committed while residing in Louisiana. I told him none. He then tried to scare me by saying something was on my record from that state. I promptly left his office called Louisiana and found out it would take 7days for them to fax stevens a copy stating that nothing was outstanding or on my record. However I could pick one up at any Louisiana state DMV same day. I immediately rented a car on my credit card drove to Shreveport, LA and spent 10 min in the DMV , faxed Dennis the letter, confirmed he got it, then drove non-stop back to Stevens. When I entered Dennis's office he told me he didn't get the fax as it was now 4pm and no supervisor was there to get the letter. I told him I spoke with you personally and you said you received it. I had to wait till next morning to get confirmation that I was hired and the next week to get trk assignment and first load. My wife did get trained on time however our experience lasted 90 days with them with neither of us ever seeing the house, amongst a whole host of other problems we had during that time with Stevens. We quit and hired on with another company. Luckily, I had worked for them before before and they hired us on even though we were still employees with Stevens for an entire month after we left Dallas because it takes those boneheads that long to process you out of their system. If I had been new to that company we would not have been allowed to take our first load until stevens had terminated us in their system. Dirty pool. Later on that year we received a letter at the house demanding our logs for that month because they had not received them. It threatened to charge us any fines they might incurr from the Dot. I called them and informed them we were working somewhere else and the girl just couldn't understand. The main reason that Stevens is so piss poor on their operations is that if you travel to their facility and do not make the grade as a driver. They will offer you a position in their office. Therefore many of the employees handling such duties don't care or simply aren't trained sufficiently in their positions. You should consider yourself lucky you didn't waste any more time then you did on trying to gain employment though Steven's Transport.

YOUR BETTER OFF!

AUTHOR: Cat Mechanic 80 - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, June 06, 2008

YEA man your better off. I was a resident field mechanic for them when I worked for Cummins and repaired the engine stuff under warranty, and stuff that they couldn't figure out. Most of the drivers that worked there always told that they were waiting for the contract for there school to be over and they were getting the hell out of there. The drivers that told me they could take there truck home that lived out of state or away from the company they hauled for said when you read the fine print that the truck had to be locked up in a secure place and bla bla and that if not you had to park it a the Ken Worth dealer. The shop service manager who there at the time was a drunk and dope head his name was Jeff something cant remember last name he was a real a*s hol* but any ways you are way better off not working there they always had a turn over for the company. The owner is a real jack as* and cheap b*****d.
