I stayed there while my house was being finished, just for 1 night, and checked out the next day. That evening I realized I left my laptop in the room. I contacted the hotel and the young lady who answered the phone had no interest in my concerns. I decided to drive to the hotel and speak with someone in person. She checked the room and did not find it. I contacted the manager the next day with no luck. According to the manager they were unable to see housekeeping removing the laptop from the room while reviewing the security tape. Yet, no one else checked in at that point. I must admit the manager did give me the insurance information. I was told by the insurance rep to file a police report. When I tried to file the police report I was told I left the property, by Newport News Police, therefore it was not stolen. I'm most bothered by the fact the employee still works there and Newport News, VA Police department stating my item was not stolen. Obviously it was stolen if it was not there when I returned.

Stealing is stealing

AUTHOR: lvlove287 - ()

No matter how you word it, if something is not where you left if that means that it was stolen. It's not lost or misplaced, but stolen. If your vehicle dissappears from outside of a hotel or anywhere else besides your home I'm pretty sure you will report it stolen. You may feel that my situation was not a Ripoff, but I disagree.

You are talking about honor system

Are you believing that you live in an ideal world? If so, I can understand why you do not get what your situation is all about.

You left your item/property unattended in a place where is not your home or property. So if it disappeared from where it was left, you cannot claim that it was stolen by the owner of the place or anybody who has access to the place even though it may be true without hard evidence. That's why, from what I understand, the police did not take or report your situation as "stolen" because it is NOT. The "it was stolen if it was not there" is NOT the definition of stolen. You need to be able to distinguish the term.

If you still do not understand, I will give another example. You are flying out from an airport. After you get through the security, you go to a restaurant and sit there eating. Once you finish, you leave the restaurant to go to the boarding area. While waiting in the boarding area, you realize that you forgot your camera in the seat in the restaurant. You go back and it's gone. You ask the owner of the restaurant and all you got was he/she does not know. What do you think? Are you claiming that the owner of the restaurant stole your camera? Or are you blaming the server who served you? Even though it is an unfortunate event, you cannot claim anyone stealing your camera (even though it is true). The only thing you can claim is that you left it unattended and it was taken by someone who is not honest.

I believe that the house keeper took it because these people would be the first one to be in the room cleaning. However, I cannot fully say to others that they stole it because there is no proof unless I have a recorded survelliance camera. If they actually return it to the rightful owner, then the owner is lucky because they are honest. However, I highly doubt that they would ever give valuable unattended goods back to its rightful owner if they cannot be caught. These people are paid a low to minimum wage, so there is no reason for them to give back value goods that are left unattended. You cannot EXPECT others to have the same ethic at the level of "doing things right" all the time.

Therefore, this is NOT A RIP OFF, but it demonstrates that you should not leave any valuable goods in a place, where is not your home/property, unattended or it will never be returned to you once it disappears!
