Talk America Problem cancelling service, problem with final bill New Hope Pennsylvania

As many here, I had problems cancelling my Talk America home phone service. Initial call occurred on Nov 20th, and I was told it would take 2-4 business days to cancel. I waited a full 6 days because of the Thanksgiving holiday, and it was still connected.

Long story short, it took *7* more calls (about 2 hrs worth) to finally get my service cancelled, which included 2 reps hanging up on me. As it turned out, a month before this hassle, I had a $10 fraud charge on my Credit Card which prompted me to cancel it and get a new number, so Talk America was unable to keep charging me for the service I wanted to cancel. I believe that if they were able to do this, this REALLY would have been a hassle.

On call #7 and #8 when they finally cancelled, I was insisting on having my bill prorated from $47.xx because I wanted the service cancelled on Nov 20th. I was told that because it took time to cancel, I could not get that. I responded that it was not MY fault that it took them 3 weeks to cancel something which should have taken 5 minutes. The last rep lied to me and told me she was sending out a prorated bill. The bill arrived at full amount.

HERE'S WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO: This worked for me. I filed a complaint with my State's (Michigan) utility commission. Every state has one, and they job is to oversee all home utilities, phone, cable, gas and electricity. I filed a complaint on Monday, and on Wednesday I got a call from a higher up, their "resolution department", from Talk America. She had her crap together, and refunded my entire bill instead of pro-rating it.

Apparently Talk America doesn't take you seriously until you file a formal complaint with a department that can affect them directly.

I recommend EVERYONE call their commission the day after Talk America said your service would be cancelled and isn't.
