I bought a Wii for my kids at Target because of a $20 gift card promotion (I could have bought it anywhere-everyone had them for $199).  The kids loved it till it stopped working yesterday.  I called the electronics dept at the 9-mile store (Pensacola FL) and they said I could exchange it with receipt, no problem.  When I took it in tonight, Angela, the LOD (?)  (she said she was the manager) said I could not exchange it without repaying the $20 giftcard.  I didn't want a refund, just a straight exchange.  I didn't have the twenty tonight and I don't see why I should give the $20 back when I just want to make a straight exchange.

The lady you spoke with is wrong. You should be able to do an even exchange, but the cashier has to tell the computer that is what you are doing.  When they scan the receipt, they have to hit the button for "even exchange" and then computer will switch over to that mode.  It only allows you to return one item at a time, but it adjusts for sales tax differences, sale prices, and other discounts.

Essentially what happens when you buy something with a giftcard, the price of the item is discounted the price of the gift card (in this case, if you were to straight return the Wii, you would only recieve $179.99 back because the receipt shows you bought a giftcard).  However, there is no "paying it back" because it is already paid for.  Even if you had to pay for it, which you shouldn't have to, it will be for the difference in price for the Wii, not for "paying back" the gift card.  Go back and speak with a different manager, or try a new store.
