I recently physically ill and decided it best to visit my local emergency room at Greenville Memorial Hospital.  Upon arriving I was taken to a room and was asked for a blood sample at which time I responded it was against my religious beliefs to have my blood taken.  The staff responded I could give it or they would take it.  I asked what do you mean take it? I was told they would place me in four point restraints and litterally take it .

I continued to insist that I was there only to be seen and not have a blood panel test which made them agrier to the point they forcefully took my blood and urine, I asked to leave and was told that was no longer an option since I was now classified as a physiatric patient. I have never in my 46 years been classified as such.  I was then sedated against my will and taken to a holding area with no clocks on the wall , no TV, no windows , it was a jail cell located within the building at the hospital.  I was keep there for three days with only saltine crackers and gatorade for food. I lost 15 pounds.

When I tried to leave I was placed in four point restraints and a nurse litterallly jabbed a needle in my arm and roughly wiped the injection site with a cotton swab which she left lying on the bare hospital floor for over a day.  To keep my sanity I hummed amazing grace and prayed. I was dischargded to a Patrick B. Harrission mental hospital some 30 miles away where I spent over a week in prison like environment until a judge declared me sane and I was then discharged.  I have no history of mental illness and never even seen a physchaiatrist before this nighmare.   Today I cheked the mail and GREENVILLE HOSPITAL SYSYTeM had sent me a bill for over 6000.00.

My reason

AUTHOR: Steve Griffin - (United States of America)

POSTED: Friday, December 28, 2012

My reason for not wanting my blood drawn because I didn't see the need for them to. I was there of my own free will and I had decided to go home. It's my understanding that patients have a right to refuse treatment. Understand that at this point I wasn't aware that I had autoimmune hypothyroidism, nor was I aware that left untreated it leads to myexdema coma and death. The disease also causes confusion, delirium, and often phycocis. Once treated with replacement thyroid hormone most all symptoms are reversed within a few days. The hospital failed to diagnose my condition and it was later diagnosed by another physician. I agree that in my state of mind at the time I needed help. My complaint is that because I am over 40 with no previous mental health issues the hospital should have suspected hypothyroidism as it is very common in patients presenting with psychiatric conditions who have no previous history. Once considered an uncooperative phycatric patient I was treated very badly. I was non violent and respectful of the staff. I was upset that I was being detained, I knew I didn't want the very strong drugs they injected into my body such as risperone and geodon that rendered me unconscious and resulting in side effects that I still have such as the tremors in both of my hhands, I hope that answers your spelling question as I am typing this on a smart phone and it's difficult to hit the correct keys. I am only trying to make people aware of abuses that I assume if I suffered that others are suffering the same. There was NO excuse for them to put me in solitary confinement and with hold food for three of the five days I was there. THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THEM TO STRAP MY BODY TO A PLASTIC PLATFORM USING FOUR POINT RESTRAINTS BECAUSE AS MY RECORDS INDICATE 'PATIENT WAS REFUSING TO STOP CRYING AND WAS UPSETTING OTHER PATIENTS, and there was no excuse for not one time being reassured that every thing would be ok. It was bad enough being sick, delirious and scared. I needed reassurance not assault, restraint, and food deprivation.

What is the reason you did not want your blood drawn?? What religion states that drawing blood is a sin?  You are full of it - plus your spelling is an abomination to the English language.  physiatric is not a word!!

UPDATE ON HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS OF GREENVILLE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

AUTHOR: Steve Griffin - (United States of America)

POSTED: Saturday, December 22, 2012

My response to the person trying to discredit the allegations of the atrocities of GREENVILLE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. It's not about the bill or money. What happened to me could happen to anyone. I went to that emergency room with a undetermined physical illness that and that illness went undiagnosed. Further more because the illness I was suffering from which was diagnosed as severe autoimmune hypothyroidiosm which was advanced to the point of myexdema and causing confusion and delirium. I was never violent or disrespectful of the staff but I believe that because I refused to give permission to draw mybblood they labeled me as uncooperative. Although I was confused I do remember what they did to me. I wasttalked over and not included on any plan of treatment . Upon being considered a psychiatric patient I was placed in an observation room with an armed guard seated directly in front of the door. I was calmly sitting in my hospital bed when I was given the drug geodon that rendered me unconscious. I remember being asked many questions by what seemed like and endless parade of different staff members after being drugged. I awoke in a wheelchair being pushed to the isolation area where I was kept in what I thought was solitary confinement for almost five days. For three of those days I was offered no food only crackers and gator aid. It was in solitary confinement that I broke down and could not stop crying. A nurse approached me with what looked like seat belts out of a car and informed me that if I didn't stop crying she would use them. I was unable to stop being upset at being imprisoned and six large men in security uniforms came and proceeded to force me onto the plastic platform and bind my ankles and wrists to the plastic platform. The right cuff was so tight my hand became a redish color and went numb. Another nurse entered the room and jabbed a syringe loaded with geodon into my arm leaving the alcohol and blood soaked cotton swab on the floor where it remained until I left. Not once did anysstaff members of that hospital bother to explain what was happening to me. Not once did I hear any compassion told anything like everything would be ok. I decided to use my experience to help others that are not able to help themselves. My basic humanrrights were violated by Greenville Memorial Hospital. There is no excuse to with hold food from a patient, there is no excuse for assaulting a patient because they are crying out for help. I have suffered debilitating side effects from this treatment that include tremors causing both hands to shake uncontrollably at times. I have had no mental issue since I began taking ssynthroid on a daily basis for the hypothyroidism. I am in my 40s with no history of mental health issues. I am not sure where to go from here as I fear that being a so called psychiatric patient may make some question my credibility. For those that do just remember that hypothyroidism is an awful disease and can affect anyone including you. Please help those who are not able to help themselves and remain mistreated even as you read this .

I have no reason to lie

AUTHOR: Steve - (United States of America)

POSTED: Wednesday, November 28, 2012

South Carolinas mental health programs and procedures arennotoriously underfunded. How can we as a people actually stand by and have our people who are classified as mentally ill treated with such disrespect. These people are often the most innocent and yet they receive the most frightening inhumae and ddown rightccruel treatment. I am making it my goal to help these people as I experienced a period of Phycocis that was due to a medical condition involving my thyroid gland. Thank god in my caseit ewas completely reversible with treatment. However I was able to witness first hand the horrors that peopleare made to rendure andthe ssickeningstgmia of bbeing labeled mentally ill. Why would anyone make up a story like this? Theseppeople needccompassion and help now not later.
