My son signed a 3 year lease on 2018 RAV4 intending to buy the car at the end of the lease in December. When there for an oil change, the sales staff strongly pressured him to end the lease and apply the price toward a new car, because of its high mileage. He told them repeatedly that he didn't want a new car, wanted to buy the one he had at the end of the lease, (in which case the mileage wouldn't matter).
He's not good at understanding business agreements and wasn't familiar with the details of the lease as its end was 8 or 9 months away and so they were able to scare, confuse and threaten him into signing an agreement to buy the almost 3 year old car for its original brand new price, because he thought it was the only thing he could do, and that was in addition to the approximately $12,000 he had already paid on the lease. He could have bought the car at the end of the lease for about $17,000 if they had just left him alone.
Our family CPA pursued the issue with both the dealership and Toyota, asking that the lease lease be reinstated and the purchase agreement canceled because it was fraudulent, but they refused. Toyota said "yeah, your client got screwed, but we can't do anything.I'm writing this for my son because he's busy with his job and I have a lot of time on my hands, but if it has to come from him, that can happen.
