I brought my van here to have 4 new tires mounted and have it aligned. While I was waiting and the van was up on the lift, the man behind the counter, Craig, stepped away and went through the service door to the bay from the waiting area.

He stopped just inside the doorway, and said something brief to the mechanic who was working on my vehicle.  A short time later, he came to me with a print-out about my brakes.

The print-out showed how much more material, in percentage units it appeared, that my brakes had.  One of the front ones, he said, was almost to the point of needing replacement.  He quoted me $200 and some change to replace them.

Now, remember, I didn't come there for brakes, and didn't ask for him to check them.  Just tires and an alignment.

When I left with my newly serviced van, there was a sudden odd sound from the front end.  It wasn't very loud, so I thought I'd imagined it.  As I used the brakes in the course of driving, the noise disappeared. Note that the noise never occurred while using the brakes, so that rules out the "low-breaks warning" mechanism as the cause.

A few days went by, and the noise became a squeek when I would start off driving.  The squeek disappeared when I applied the brakes, and when the parts down there would warm up after driving a while.

Now, the noise is a huge scraping sound, metal on metal, that only goes away when I press the brake, or after the brakes have been used quite often during a drive.  The rubbing sound remains and can be heard when I ride near a jersey wall or something that the sound can bounce off of, and reach back up to the driver's compartment.

I can imagine going back to this Tread Quarters Discount Tire to have the squeek/rub looked at and stopped, and being told that not only do my breaks need maintenance, but that I need new parts like rotors, callipers, etc.

I've owned this van for 13 years, with the associated maintenance required over the years.  It has Never made this sound. Not when brake pads were thin.  Not when the callipers had to be replaced a few years ago. Never before bringing it to this shop.
