TRENT VALLEY HONDA Fined $20,000.00 Under The Environmental Protection Act per Ministry of the Environment News Realease dated September 13, 2005.

PETERBOROUGH -- 970207 Ontario Limited, operating as Trent Valley Honda, has been fined $20,000 after pleading quilty to one count under the Environmental Protection Act (EPA).

Trent Valley Honda is a car dealership located in Otonabee-South Monaghan Township within Peterborough County. The court heard that on June 19, 2003, a customer at the dealership observed staff dumping oily sludge into a ditch at the rear of the property. As a result of these allegations, Ministry of the Environment's staff inspected the property and confirmed the dumping of the waste material.

In April 2004, further investigation by the Investigations and Enforcement Branch determined that the extent of the contamination was greater than first anticipated and that the dumping of oily sludge was a COMMON PRACTICE at this dealership.

On September 8, 2005, the corporation pleaded quilty to one count of depositing or permitting the deposit of waste upon property that is not a waste disposal site for which a Certificate of Approval (CofA) or a Provisional CofA has been issued, contrary to Section 40 of EPA. The corporation was fined $20,000 plus victim fine surcharge. Since the incident, the corporation also spent $139,000 to clean up its property.
Justice of the Peace Peter J. Hiscox heard the plea and sentencing submissions in the Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough, Ontario.

From the rumblings I've heard within the community I understand one of the dealerships employees was "hung out to dry" over this.

Good luck to you Trent Valley Honda. Being a respected member of this community means respecting our backyard. Respect is something you must earn.

Mrs... Disgusted was it? You act so surprised that this was happening. Obviously you've lived a sheltered life if this is the first you've heard of a shop dumping some sort of chemical waste out back. My money is on this "oily sludge" being the mud/oil gunk that fills up the troughs in the shop floor over the winter. The troughs usually run to a waste container, but when they get blocked with mud, they must be shoveled out. I have personally worked for three shops (two being GM dealerships, one being a Wal-mart lube shop) where I have had to shovel out these troughs and was told to dump the waste out back out of sight. I am not condoning this behavior, I am merely stating that it is a common practice. Now go... Go play environmental super-cop and take down every other shop in the country, for now your eyes have been opened to the not so pink and fuzzy world you thought you lived in.

Sincerely:

Mark
