Rented two storage lockers from this facility. After first one half filled, found out the locking mechanism did not work, i.e., slide bar went into door jam, lock went on, appeared locked, but all you had to do was push forward, and the entire locked door went up. Reported to management, locking mechanism replaced after one week. Is a gated facility with security cameras and onsite management.
However, went back one week later to find management had put a second padlock of their own on my locker. Had to track a real person down to get them to take their lock off my locker. Told second lock was due to increase in vandalism and management wanted double locks on all lockers. Purchased three more locks from their office, U-Haul locks, and put them on lockers.
Returned in last few months (original rentals began in March 2007) to find RV on back aisle with window busted out and shattered glass all over, cars jacked up with wheels missing, etc. Found my new locking mechanism pried forward with obvious heavy tool in attempt to cut off locks. Mentioned to management who became hostile, defensive, and told us to "call police." E-mailed corporate U-Haul about problem.
Corporate sends e-mail right back to on site manager. On site manager sent SIX EVICTION notices on two lockers stating being evicted for "failing to comply with terms and conditions set forth in contract." Called manager, Atara Washington, Atara always "unavailable." Called corporate, and e-mailed corporate. Referred via e-mail to a Katherine in Fairfield, CA regional office. Spoke with Katherine Wednesday evening who stated she would speak with Atara and get back to me that evening.
Never heard from Katherine again, despite two phone calls to her office daily since. Katherine always unavailable. Phoned Corporate U-Haul, given customer Problem ID number and told to wait 48 hours for a representative to contact me. No one contacted me. Called corporate again, told "problem" referred to regional office, i.e., Katherine the Unreachable. Previously told by Katherine being evicted because I did not heed e-mails from Atara to change to circular locks. Told Katherine asked for paper billing from onset because was MOVING, COMPUTER TORN DOWN, E-MAIL ACCESS SKETCHY. If Atara sent e-mails to change locks, never got them.
Received photo copy of e-mail evictions today, with Atara's signature and eviction date filled in. Found Boycott U-Haul website online. Guess I am not the only customer with ugly experiences with U-Haul. Has anyone else out there had bad U-Haul Storage experiences. I simply suggested to Corporate that vandalism seemed to be an ongoing theme within this gated facility and perhaps the vandalism was coming from within given the attitude of their onsite management, obvious pried locks all over the facility, parked U-Haul trucks all over the place with the keys to the same in the manager's office.
The idea of the "customer is always right" falls on deaf ears with this company. No one takes responsibility for a problem, no real person is available to voice your concerns to, you get passed back and forth with telephone calls, and the company seems to condone VANDALISM. If you value your VALUABLES, pick stay away from this facility and U-Haul in general. Check out the Boycott U-Haul Website, scary!

I have also stored at this facility and was forced to buy the hardened steel locks. My unit was still broken into. It took all of 1 second to do it! The new Manager told me that it was probably an "inside job" as few people in the public are aware of the design flaw in their doors.
They make you buy their hardened locks or prove that you already own one. Yet the rest of their lock assembly is NOT hardened. In my opinion, this is negligence!

Why would you want to stay?

Moving is a pain but I would not want to leave my stuff in a place like that. I would not have waited for an eviction notice to move out. It would be just a matter of time before your locker got broken into.
I have managed a couple of self-storages. Disk locks are more secure than standard padlocks, but not by much. With a cordless drill, a sharp drill bit, and a $15 jig I have opened them in as little as a minute.
