Potential customers and employees beware! It always pays to do your homework when you get an offer that seems "too good to be true!"
After moving up to Michigan a week ago, I started looking for customer support jobs online and found an ad for Universal Gas and Electric that wanted Customer Service Reps paying an average of $25 per hour. I faxed my resume and within one hour (no exaggeration) I received a phone call from the recruiting center.
They asked for my name and phone number again, then when I asked for more details about the position, the woman on the phone (Cris) replied that they had several positions available in this location and would possibly be considering me for management (which is viable as I have some management experience) and pay an average of $25 per hour, or more for managers. I made an interview appointment for the next day and she said to bring my ID, because if I passed the interview they would want to process the paperwork right away and get me to start asap.
Before I went to the appointment, I decided to look at the company's website to try to get more information on the job description. The first Google hit was the company's website (containing no job description) and the second was a Rip Off Report on the company. It turns out someone had the exact same experience, only he worked for them for a time.
Another person wrote a Ripoff Report from a customer's point of view, of which I can provide proof to back the claim up. I actually went to the building where Universal is located in Southfield, and in the same building I found the Better Business Bureau...what luck!
According to the BBB Detroit's report (which is available to the public, just call and ask for the BBB Reliability Report for Universal Energy), Universal Gas and Electric a.k.a. Universal Energy has an F rating!
In the last 36 months there have been 309 complaints against this company, 211 of which received NO response from the company!
Several more are still unresolved cases...
