Unleashed Pet Rescue has made a living out of getting ahold of any lost pets they can find and adopting them out without ever trying to find the owner first. According to Kansas law, they are required to perform "due diligence" in finding the owner during the 3-day stray hold period. I know of three different individuals who have had to go to the Mission, KS police in order to get their pet back. In one of these instances, the rescue has refused to return the dog to its owner, even when police went and demanded the dog be returned to the owner. Criminal charges have now been filed against them in this case. Another one of these people is currently trying to get her dog back from the people who adopted it from Unleashed. The third party was able to retrieve her dog from the rescue when she filed a police report. The owner just keeps saying "its my dog after the three day hold! its my dog now!" It is like a puppy mill but with people's lost pets instead of puppies.
