I recently got scammed by movers. After loading my stuff onto their truck, they told me the price was going to be nearly 5x the high-end of the range they estimated over email. Their unprofessional, unethical, and likely criminal behavior included:

  • Movers showed up 3 hours late.
  • We were told we'd be hiring two movers for a cost of $50/hr. Three movers showed up demanding $70/hr.
  • In advance of the move, I emailed a list of possessions to get an estimate. They estimated the move would take 2-3 hours. However, the movers took long breaks and only two of the three did the vast majority of the loading. They were able to therefore stretch the loading period alone to 3 hours.
  • Once all of our possessions were on the truck, the movers changed the price, demanding fees that were never disclosed (an hour each way of travel time, gas charges, charges for going up and down stairs). They would not give us our possessions back until we complied.
  • As stated, we had to compensate them for unloading the truck before they actually unloaded it. They calculated this fee based on the intentionally extended loading time (3 hours at $70/hr for 3 men, plus the surprise stairs fee). Before unloading started, of the workers then walked off the job, but the remaining two were still able to complete the unloading process in under two hours. Even by their fraudulent calculations, the unloading fee should have been based on 2 hours x $50/hr (two men), not 3 hours x $70/hr (three men). Unprepared for these charges, we couldn't even withdraw that amount of cash the ATM because we'd maxed out withdraws for the day. We needed a friend to loan us $100.
  • After blatantly ripping us off, the movers had the audacity to demand a tip.

All told, the $100-150 estimate turned into $710. I have lived in NYC for a decade and moved numerous times. The movers tried to condescend to me, insisting that these charges and practices were normal, but I am experienced enough to know that this is not standard industry practice. Just a couple years ago I hired a team of Craigslist movers to move the same possessions all the way from Upper Manhattan to Brooklyn, and the cost was just over $400. This move with Vitess was only six blocks, but cost nearly twice as much.

As you can imagine, they didn't leave much evidence about how to track them down, but here is some info about this team/company so you can avoid them:

-They advertise themselves as Vitess Moving & Transfer. I don't know whether or not they're affiliated with Vitesse (note the "e") Moving & Transfer, based in Chicago & LA, but it seems unlikely. It's possible that these scammers use different company names, though, so be vigilant.
-The email address I corresponded with was vitess.newyork@gmail.com, and the name attached to it is "Lisa N."
-A phone number referenced in one of the ads is 917-609-2752.
-The phone number of our specific moving team's leader was 347-991-4044.
-They said they were coming from NJ, and their truck had Jersey plates.
-The team we dealt with consisted of three guys, all Eastern European (I believe Russian). The team leader was tall, thin, and had very light blonde hair. He looked young (maybe early-to-mid 20s) and spoke pretty good English.

Be careful, y'all. Don't let this happen to you.
