I had an electrical problem with my 99 f-150. I had it towed to waldorf ford in waldorf maryland. The service advisor, ross, called to tell me it would cost $1469 to fix it.

He said it needed the following-
new windshield as a leak in the winshield shorted out parts.

Why not reseal it I asked.
new battery and cables assembly-truck started strong but was not getting gas
new fuse box-this seemed legitimate
gem module-again this seemed legimate.

I had the truck towed to an independant dealer who is fixing the truck like it was his for at least a thousand dollars less.

I was told by my mechanic that this service advisor continually adds on items that are not needed or are unesesary.

I have dealt with waldorf ford before and was satisfied but with a differant advisor.

If I have a problem again and get ross, I will never go back again and will have the truck towed elsewhere.

By the way, ross wanted to charge me $100 for diagnostic services. I got it reduce to $50.

Obviously ross works on commission.

DEALERS ARE NOT ALWAYS MORE EXPENSIVE

AUTHOR: Lee - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, April 21, 2008

I WORK IN THE AUTOMOTIVE BUSINESS AND RUN A SERVICE FACILITY I ALSO AT 1 TIME WORKS AT WALDORF FORD WITH ROSS WHO IS AN HONEST AND TRUST WORTHY GUY SO HERE IS MY REBUTTLE DEALER SPEND ALOT OF TIME AND MONEY MAKING SURE THAT THEY ARE COMPETIVE EVEN WITH FACTORY TRAINED TECHNICIANS AND FACTORY PARTS THAT IS NOT ENOUGH TO GET OUR CUSTOMERS TO KEEP COMING BACK IF WE WHERE NOT COMPETITIVE DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENTS WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO CONTINUE THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT IS THE LIFE BLOOD OF ANY DEALERSHIP AND CUSTOMER SATISFACTION IS THERE NUMBER 1 GOAL AND KNOWN FROM WORKING AT THIS APRTICULAR DEALER FOR OVER 3 YEARS HOW IMPORTANT CUSTOMER SATISFACTION IS HOWEVER WHEN YOU HAVE SOMEOBE COMPLAINING ABOUT PRICE ITS HARD TURN THE CUSTOMERS IDEAS FOR THIS APRTICULAR CONCERN HOWEVER ROSS SHOULD HAVE MADE YOU AWARE THAT THE PROPER CORRECTION FOR FIXING YOU WATER LEAK WOULD BE TO REMOVE THE WINDSHIELD TO RESEAL IT AND DURING REMOVAL WINDSHIELD ALMOST ALWAYS CRACK TO RESEAL A WINDSHIELD WITH IT IN THE VEHICLE IS A WEAK ATTEMPT AT A REPAIR AND FOR SURE WILL NOT HOLD UP OVER TIME THIS SAID A DEALERSHIP IS REQUIRED TO WARRANTY ITS WORK FOR 12 MONTHS OR 12000 MILES SO OF COURSE A SUBPAR REPAIR IS NOT SOMETHINGS ITS GOING TO DO BUT GETTING BACK TO PRICING IF YOU CALL A PARTICULAR DEALERSHIP AND ASK IT LABOR RATE THEN CALL THE SHOPS IN THE LOCAL AREA TYPICALLY YOUR GOING TO FIND THAT THE DEALER IS NO MORE THAN $10.00 MORE PER HOUR AND AT TIMES MAY EVEN BE LESS I CAN TELL YOU THAT THE DEALER I CURRENTLY RESIDE AT HAS A LABOR RATE OF $97.93 PER FLAT RATE HOUR WHICH FOR THE D.C. AREA NO BAD MERCHANTS TIRE HAS A NATIONAL LABOR RATE OF $90.00 PER FLAT RATE HOUR WHICH MEANS DEALER IN SOUTHER VA WHO HAVE LABOR RATES IN THE $80'S ARE CHEAPER ITS ALL RELATIVE BUT THEN YOU ALSO HAVE TO LOOK AT WHAT YOU GET FOR THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN THE PRICE OF MANY PARTS WHEN TALKING ABOUT OEM COMAPRED TO THE AFTER MARKET AND THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN QUALITY JUST IN COMPARING BRAKE PADS FACTORY TO AFTER MARKET NOT ONLY IS THE COST OF R&D BUILT INTO THE PRICE OF THE PADS BUT THERE ARE SPECIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS THAT FACTORY BRAKE PADS MUST MEET THAT THE AFTERMARKETS ARE NOT REQUIRED TO MEET OR EVEN COME CLOSE TO SO CALL AROUND A COMPARE PRICES AND REMOEMBER IF THE DEALERS A LITTLE MORE EXPENSEIVE THINK ABOUT WHY THE DEALERS MORE EXPENSIVE IS IT JUST A DIFFERENCE IN THE PRICE OF THE PARTS OR IS PARTS AND LABOR

You missed the good part, Peter

"He said it needed the following-
new windshield as a leak in the winshield shorted out parts."

The windshield is 8 years old. Why bother removing it, and putting the same old, scratched, sandblasted glass back in?

"I had the truck towed to an independant dealer who is fixing the truck like it was his for at least a thousand dollars less."

Great. Another case of CHEAPer must mean BETTER. This brings me to...

"If I have a problem again and get ross, I will never go back again and will have the truck towed elsewhere."

Why would you have another problem? Could it be because you declined the required repair that was offered to you by the FORD representative?

"By the way, ross wanted to charge me $100 for diagnostic services. I got it reduce to $50.

Obviously ross works on commission."

You bust the guy's chops, even after he reduced your bill. And you people wonder why I never give back anything. Why should I? So I can be slammed for doing my job? You'll notice my shop has NEVER been in these threads. I have a much more intelligent clientelle.

And yes, Ross works on commission. So what? How does his rate/style of pay equate to a ripoff? How do you get paid? By the hour? You're ripping people off by getting paid to work for a full 60 minutes/hour, while taking breaks. The customer doesn't get a break from the bill just because you don't work like a robot. Salary? You're an even bigger ripoff. You get paid whether you work or not. Are you refunding the customers for the time you waste time at your job? Commission? That can't be. If it is, you are the King of the Robbers, since you seem to believe all commissioned employees rip people off. It takes one, to know one.

Attempted

AUTHOR: Jennifer - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, September 08, 2006

He actually said Attempted ripoff. I guess he is trying to warn people that they overcharge for your services, and try to sell items that aren't needed.

Which then leads me to agree with you. I am still surprised at the amount of people who do not realize that the dealer is more expensive 99% of the time. SOMEBODY has to pay for the waiting room with the cable tv, internet, free drinks (sometimes snacks) and all the other little goodies. So my advice is- if you are going to go to the dealer at least wait in the waiting room and eat all the snacks and drinks you can. Use the internet, watch tv and stare at the little fishies in the giant tank. The ripoff is much smaller when you take advantage of all those "freebies"!

Well colour me surprised!!!

AUTHOR: Peter - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, September 08, 2006

You mean to say that large car dealerships charge considerably MORE money for service than the "independent" ones? I hate to tell you this, but it is almost always more expensive to service a vehicle at the dealership. Assuming that they explained in detail what was wrong with your vehicle and provided a quote before asking your permission to begin work, I do not see how you can claim a "rip off" occurred. It is your right as a consumer to shop around and select a service based on price if that is what you prefer. How does declining the dealership's quote based on their high price and going elsewhere constitute a rip off?
