My widowed mother purchased $10,000.00 worth of carpet that was touted to be the top of the line in quality. ($32.00 per square yard)It was professionally installed and appropriately padded by the dealer.

Within a year we noticed the fibers starting to pull up in certain areas (not traffic areas) At first we thought the cat was stretching on the carpet and catching his nails in the fiber. Then the cat died and we noticed the fibers pulling up in other areas.

We figured out that the problem was at it's worst in the areas subjected to sunlight. I believe the backing that holds the fiber was desolving from UV rays.

We called the dealer who gave us to a Shaw representative who eventually came around and picked up a sample of the disappearing carpet along with a sample of an uninstalled leftover carpet in storage (out of any light source)
After almost a year of contact with both the dealer and the rep but no response from Shaw Industries I began camping out on the phone with the dealer.

The dealer finally offered us a selection of carpet to choose from to replace the faulty carpet installed. This was touted to be at no cost to us. Not quite the truth since the carpet we were shown as a replacement is sold at half the cost of the original faulty carpet. The dealers idea or Shaws is that we should be financially punished for installing their faulty carpet.

It's my widowed mothers fault for purchasing from this dealer and Shaw so she should be happy to accept a cheaper carpet, the same pad and the dealer is throwing the installation in for free. No Thanks!

former carpet rep

AUTHOR: David - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, March 29, 2004

As a former carpet rep for Mohawk the dealer is the agent for the mill. I'm sure Shaw responded back to the dealer but the dealer is to communicate to the customer. 20 yrs ago I had Hawaii as my territory and I can recall that even back then certain types of nylon could not be sold in HI due to ultr violent. The problem however was fading not deterioriation of the latex backing. I would address these concerns to flooringamerica.com. They are a 'franchise' but they take consumer problems seriously. For your info Shaw several yrs back started selling carpet at retail and for a while Flooring America was owned by Shaw, so there is more than a friendly relationship going on.

Why Report Installer instead of Manufacturer?

AUTHOR: Amanda - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, March 28, 2004

I'm really just curious as to why you've named Wayne's Carpet as the evil-doer in your criticism instead of the manufacturer, Shaw.

The problem you are having has absolutely nothing to do with the sales and installation of the carpet your mother has. It is purely a manufacturing defect/issue.

I think it is rather irresponsible to use Wayne's Carpet in your heading instead of Shaw. Don't you think that someone might see this and think Wayne's Carpet has done something wrong?

I do hope that you are able to resolve this issue with the manufacturer. I do work in the Warranty Service Field and your carpet should be replaced with the exact specs of the carpet you initially ordered.
