Today, May 16, 2009, I attempted to transfer a small amount of money to the UK from here in the USA. My first time using Western Union On-line. However, not my first nor 100th time using Western Union. I've used them many times. And everyone knows them to be the most expensive means of money transfer. Sometimes we are forced to bite the bullet.

After a lengthy application as a new on-line customer, I began my transaction. Then, another lengthy and time consuming application to send my funds. After dealing with all this, and still not completing all the necessary items, one of the next pages says they cannot send the funds due to a security issue.

I attempted to resolve the issue, only to get a message telling me to contact their toll free number.

So, I called, only to discover they had already removed the funds from my card without completing the transfer. In other words.... they did nothing but take my money.

I asked when the funds would be returned and they wouldn't give me a direct answer. Only that it might be in a few days. When I pushed on this time restriction, the lady then tells me it might be three days, she didn't know.

After hanging up, I called to see if the money was actually taken from my card. And sure enough, yes, it WAS taken. And in fact, they have taken nearly twice the amount I originally agreed to, including their fees.
Now, anyone can call this whatever they want. But this is internet fraud. Plain and simple.

I will likely need to have my card company to try and get it refunded, (if i ever see it again at all), and also, sit here with no money currently left on the card.
The sad part I left off was this; This money was going to a charity for children, that I work with. Now, they don't get the money, I'm out the money, and stuck with the inconvenience

Beware of Western Union. Not only are they terribly over-priced, ... but they DO NOT deliver their, so called, "Money In Minutes"...(it requires at least one day),... and now they have stooped to stealing money from customers without providing their services for the payment

It may be a while for your refund. Make sure you have submitted the request in writing. This is from their online terms and conditions:


REFUNDS OF PRINCIPAL AMOUNT and cancellation of the money transfer will be made upon written request of the Sender if payment to the Receiver has not yet been made at the time the request is processed by Western Union. REFUNDS OF TRANSFER FEES will be made upon written request of the Sender if the money transfer is not available to the Receiver within the time specified by Western Union for the selected service, subject to the hours of operation that the Service is offered at the Agent location selected by the Receiver for payment and other special conditions. Refunds will be made within 45 days of receipt of a valid written request from the Sender. "
