Alert to all homeowners, everywhere.

It was recently brought to my attention by a tenant how he found me, my full legal name, and my home address.

I was not happy with Zillow policies as I'm a single woman and this is a dangerous position to be a landlord with some crazy tenant situations. When I just checked what he had said, indeed, Zillow LINKs from the address to OUR COUNTY RECORDS, which then disclose the full name of the owners!!! I can not tell you HOW dangerous this is to all of us!!!

Tenant would never have thought to go directly to the county assessors office site, but sure enough Zillow just gives it away. . I didn't ask to be included and now i see the personal dangers associated with this.

Aside from the completely outrageously incorrect valueing of our properties, this site should be banished from the internet.

What you can do in your own State, is write a complaint to your Attorney General's office Consumer Affairs office.

I demanded that Zillow remove all data from their database including property addresses so such a dangerous connection could no longer be made.  Of course, that fell on deaf ears.

Not exactly a RipOff...

AUTHOR: Robert - ()

First of all if your County's Public Records are available on the Internet that include the owner's Full Name, that is a problem you need to take up with the County.  You say that the tenant wouldn't have thought to look at the County Records..well it isn't the Tenant you have to worry about.  It is the scammers and thiefs who do know to look at places such as the County Records you need to worry about.

You want Zillow banned...okay what about the other dozen companies and the County itself that will still show all of this private information.  Yes, if Zillow has it you can guarantee there are other sites.  You are trying to plug a single hole in a colander, when you should be looking for a way to just shut off the faucet.

I would highly suggest if you are that worried about your privacy, then do as the other poster suggested.  Start looking into an LLC or trust.  Not only can it help in this matter but they provide other protections that can be quite advantatous.

Oh and FYI, at least in my County they do not publish this type of information.

You have other options

If you are concerned about your safety regarding your real estate property, you have other options. One of the best ways is to set up an LLC or a trust and put the property in the LLC or trust. Speak to your attorney and your CPA to see which way is best for you from a tax and a legal standpoint. This is a good time of year to get that done too.

You may or may not (I don't know your location) be able to have your property tax record set up as a confidential record. Check your county tax website to see what the criterian is to have a 'confidential record' in your county.

Really, for a rental property, an LLC or trust is very easy, cost effective and works well to keep your personal information private.
