I received 6 months free AOL with the purchase of my computer. After the free time was almost up, I called the cancellation number listed. I had gone to a cable modem and didn't need or want the service anymore. The person I talked to would not cancel my account, but, instead gave me another month free to try out the AOL for broadband. I accepted the free month to try the broadband and wasn't impressed. I called every month since and they do not want to cancel the account. They keep saying how great the service is, but I don't want it. This makes 3 months in a row I have gotten the same run-around.

I had the same problem in OKC

I used AOL for six months free in Oklahoma City back in 1998. When I called to cancel, they said "Okay, but we're going to give you one more month for free, so you can use it."

I stopped using the service immediately and didn't think anything of it until two months later when a charge for AOL service appeared on my credit card.

When they 'gave me one month free' they never cancelled my account. Thinking back on it, I'm pretty sure they never planned on cancelling it at all, but were trying to 'save' my account as mentioned above.

Three years later, after I moved to Portland, OR, I received a letter saying I still owed them money for time used AFTER I had cancelled my account.

I threw it away...

NOT YOUR FAULT / SNEAKY AND FRAUDULENT

You are yet another of the millions of victims of AOL with myself included. I've complained to every person, business and government institution I could find. It has become personal. Please do everyone a favor and report it to the Federal Trade Commission.

AOL has already been sued for this in Sept of 2003. The FTC fined them and told them to cease and desist such practice. The FTC is letting them slide. If enough people complain they will have no choice but to enforce the court order. Also, everyone need to complain to their state attorney general's office. If we all get together we may be able to fight big business fraud.

I used to work for AOL at the Oklahoma City call center. I worked in registrations, but know how saves works. Noticed I said saves and not cancelations. The AOL call center is the highest paying call center in OKC. The reason is that we get paid a handsome base pay + commission. For saves, commission is based on each account you save. They will push you to the breaking point to get you to stay. Giving free service is not suppose to be done more than once, but reps don't care. They will do anything for their commission though. So this will happen to anyone who calls to cancel their account.

Word of warning: If you have AOL and call in for any reason, DO NOT push 1 or 0. It will not save time! You will be routed to the registrations department. They get paid very well upselling you without even realizing you're being sold. Also, they cannot do anything else other than upselling you!

AOL is not the super ISP it used to be. They are desperate to keep members, and it has become very cutthroat.

This was my fault!(?)

As an update, I did finally get my AOL cancelled, but it cost me $9.95 out of my checking account. After trying to cancel for the 3 months prior, I forgot to call in early enough to get it cancelled before the next billing cycle. Therefore, I was charged for 1 month, which I didn't even use because I called back in 3 days after and requested to cancel. They tried to get me to keep using it til the end of my "paid" time, but I told them NO, just cancel it as the money is mine to waste if I don't use it. I know I wasn't refunded any money. I hope this doesn't happen to anybody else.
