I received a legal summons and complaint in the mail, to the wrong address, stating that I owed $932.98 plus interest on an ATT account that ATT cancelled after i received terrible service and reduced both my phone line plans to the lowest service possible and paid the minimum amount due. I received a bill with two $250.00 cancellation fees from ATT for both my phones. I disputed the amount, but at that point ATT sold my account to this company.

I never received phone calls from ATT or Palisades Collections, and I never received any statements or correspondnces from them.

When I called the attorneys office today, the paralegal who was extremely rude, told me that I could pay the full amount or go to court, but they were very successful and it was not worth my effort. I asked to speak to an attorney there, she refused, would not give me his phone number and then hung up on me.
I called Palisades and they refused to assit me, stating I had to contact the attorneys.

I attempted to call the attorneys, but when they went to verify my social security #, IT WAS THE WRONG ONE. After that, 3 paralegals hung up on me, stating they couldnt speak with me.

I called Palisades again, who said they would contact the attorneys....this is not how I wanted to spend my week.....

The first part is general things you should do / not do in dealing with collection agencies ... the second part is from another consumer advocate site budhibbs.com and his feelings towards them

Tell them to validate by

. What the money you say I owe is for;
Explain and show me how you calculated what you say I owe;
Provide me with copies of any papers that show I agreed to pay what you say I owe;
Provide a verification or copy of any judgment if applicable;
Identify the original creditor;
Prove the Statute of Limitations has not expired on this account
Show me that you are licensed to collect in my state
Provide me with your license numbers and Registered Agent

1. NEVER talk to a collection agency on the phone. Period.

2. Keep good records. This can be the difference between a good and bad settlement. Don't expect them to remember you or what you agreed upon.

3. Send all correspondence via registered mail,
receipt requested and put the registered mail number ON THE LETTER. DO NOT SIGN THE LETTER TYPE YOUR NAME

4. Keep a copy of every letter you send.

5. Penalties and extra interest are typically fictious amounts of money added on by the collection agency to pad their profits. Sometimes as much as to 50% of the debt or more claimed to be owed by a collection agency consisting of interest and fees. This is illegal, every state has usery laws (which dictate the maximum interests allowed to be charged. That is except North Dakota. There are no such laws which is why most credit card companies incorporate there.) Junk debt buyer pay anywhere from 1 cent to 7 cents on the dollar, there is no way there is this much interest.

6. Time is on your side. As time passes, the creditors will likely stop calling and the debt will be filed away for future attention or until the SOL runs out ..

Bud Says

Also known as Asta Funding, a publicly held organization worth a LOT of money. Palisades Collections, LLC is their bottom feeder entity collecting on old, worthless accounts. Their up to now good reputation, is being flushed down the toilet with the illegal activity of Palisades.

Purchasing old debts is okay, however the law is quite clear that you must accurately report information on credit bureau reports. Palisades Collections apparently is not aware of that law. The complaints we receive on them are for a lot of accounts out of statute, changing the dates of last activity on credit reports and grossly inflated accounts.

This could be construed as an attempt to inflate their portfolios to Wall Street to make them look better than they are, NOT an uncommon practice for a bottom feeder.

Palisades Collections needs to be confronted at every step with demands for debt validation. All of their tainted credit bureau reporting should be disputed; court suits MUST be vigorously defended. Challenge each and every document they file, assume they are bogus and manufactured. Palisades appears to be engaging in a lot of illegal collection activity and credit bureau reporting, they deserve to be sue at every opportunity by consumer law professionals.

Read how these greedy bottom feeders are making a fortune based on the misfortunes of others from their own website: http://www.corporate-ir.net/ireye/ir_site.zhtml?ticker=ASFI&script=700

I recommend you utilize the experts at: naca to go after these deep pocket icons of American enterprise. Let owners Arthur Stern, Gary Stern and Mitchell Herman know what you REALLY think of them and their dumpster diving business.
