We went to Jackson Hewitt last year and we wanted to know what would be in our best interest for that year. We wanted to file married but seperate. The tax preparer didn't explain to us that we couldn't do that because we live at the same address. Instead he went ahead and did our taxes that way. He put us both down on our individual tax forms head of the same household and each claiming a child.
We found the mistake later that day and we went back to him to ammend it. He charged us $60.00 for His mistake and he put us both as married filing jointly. Now we got the IRS after us for the extra money that they gave us when we filed the first time. Now all this stress could of been avoided if he would of just explained all of this before he went ahead and did our taxes. We really think that it's Jackson Hewitt's fault and they should pay the money not us. We didnt prepare our own taxes. They did. WE are not going back and we are gonna tell all our friends not to use Jackson Hewitt.

I am the child of a CPA and believe me these people have no business being in the Tax preparation field -
Their number #1 reason for doing business during tax season is to rip you off!
Talk to a CPA and if the CPA cannot help you ask that individual the number for a good Tax Lawyer (yep got one my family)

I don't understand this:

If you are referring to the extra tax you SHOULD have paid, then I don't see where J-H owes you anything because you should have and would have paid that in the first place.
If you are talking about a PENALTY, then J-H probably owes you something.
Instead of using a big-box tax service, find yourself an Enrolled Agent. I use an E.A. who is also an accountant.... $150 for a tricky Fed + State return.
