We received our sleep number bed approximately 2 weeks after placing the order. The very first night both my husband and I started experiencing severe back pain. Which was new to both of us. After 3 nights my husband called customer service and requested that we get the authorization number to return the bed. He spoke with a representative Keith, who told him that we had to keep the bed for 30 full nights before we could return it. The next day, I called and spoke with another representative Vicki. Vicki finally did agree to let me return the bed. However, this was the first I learned of the return "options" She offered to let me pack and ship the bed myself, obtain prepaid shipping labels from select comfort, or schedule in home pickup. She made it clear that if the bed did not arrive in MN in perfect condition I would be charged the full price for the bed. For this reason, I chose the in home pick up. I did not have the original boxes because the men who installed the bed took them. Vicki also told me that the mattress pad was not refundable. So this means the 30 day risk free trial would cost me nearly 600 dollars.
I do not think paying nearly 600 dollars is "risk free". I have filed a report with the BBB but so far it has not helped. Select Comfort's legal representative Mary McDufffie has been very rude in her replies. She is correct in the fact that Select Comfort has covered themselves well with the fine print. They did offer me a refund on the mattress pad with the original packaging. Unfortunately I no longer have it because their representatives took it for disposal at set up. She also mentioned that I could have exchanged the pad for a 20 dollar pillowcase and then be credited the rest of my money. Funny that was never mentioned until the time frame for this exchange had already passed.
I consider myself to be a smart shopper, and usually I make good decisions when it comes to purchasing. I hope that reading this will help someone else not make the mistake I have made. Select Comfort has brought so much stress, heart ache, and worry into my life. They sell a cheaply made product, which does not even come close to giving promised results. Take advantage of people seeking a good night's sleep. Yet they cover themselves hiding behind the fine print. Buyer Beware the Risk free trial is not with Risk!

POSTED: Sunday, May 08, 2011My reason for buying this bed is that I have lower back problems, including herniated disks and osteopenia. I am somewhat surprised that you experienced back pains. Two thoughts come to mind.
First, you may have set the pressure to high. I find the best way to set the pressure is to release the air until I feel my butt contact the box springs below and then add a little more air. Many people have the mistaken idea that a firm mattress is desirable but softer is almost always better as the mattress will conform to the shape of your spine.
Second, you did not use it long enough to allow your back to adjust. I have found when switching from a conventional mattress to either a water bed or Sleep Number bed that there is a period of adjustment while my back reshapes itself from an unnaturally straight position to naturally curved. Yes, it can be uncomfortable for a time. Had you given it the full thirty days you might have experienced a more positive outcome.
I cannot comment on your experiences with returning the product as I have never had a desire or need to do so.
