Lifelock claims to protect your credit when in fact they do not.  I purchased lifelock because my identy had been stolen. They assured me that would protect my credit. They assured me that they would work with me if my credit was stolen while under thier care. 2008 I wanted to switch from dishnetwork to direct tv. I called direct Tv to learn someone had purchased direct tv in Southern Ca in a area I had never been to. I have not lived in southern Ca since I was a kid. I am now in my 50s.   Lifelock stayed on the phone with me while I spoke with direct Tv.  Direct TV  claimed I had thier eqipment and owed $454.00. Lifelock representative was on the other line with me the entire time. When we hung up with Direct Tv , lifelock said they would do some research and get back to me.  That never happened. When I called back they claimed I was not a member when this happened. When I proved I was they then said they couldn't do anything more they were not lawyers. My credit was shot !
I filed a police report. Two years later Direct Tv sent me a letter stating they had made a mistake and I owed nothing.  I spent the next couple years trying to clear my credit.

Lifelock has been sued many times, recently they settled for millions.

You can buy identity protection with your rental insurance or home owners insurance .

Here's how to really protect your self. Do not use your home for mail, get a PO Box or one of those mailing address like the UPS store. Sec check your credit cards and banks acct online everyday.
3rd OPT OUT online for everything from junk mail to credit cards. credit cards you will have to give your SSN on the web site. It is SAFE.  The OPT OUT web site will instruct you on more ways to protect your self.  Last your local police outside of a police report will not help you. Identity theft as bad as it is, is not a priority for them. With budget cuts your on your on.
Proving who you are to the creditors who believe you owe them money is a nightmare. It takes on average three years to clear your name. Identity theft is the fastest growing crime. The number one  victim today is our kids,  parents wouldn't think thief's would still their kids identity but they do. "Please protect your and your familes identy. getting it back is a nightmare."
