To start off, I am a 23 year old kidney stone patient preparing to undergo an ESWL procedure for my severe stone pain. I am currently out of work and medicated until they can get me in for surgery. My primary care physician wrote me a script for Percocet so I would not run out over the weekend and I could avoid another trip to the ER, and I think there's a certain time limit for how often I can fill pain medicine prescriptions.

I do not believe I was treated with respect, dignity, courtesy, or professionalism and I am extremely outraged and disappointed.

My mother and I went to this particular Walgreens location about 11:45 PM EST to drop my prescription off in the drive thru window. It was for Percocet, a narcotic pain medication. We sat there for about 10 minutes without being acknowledged by the pharmacy staff. My mother hit the buzzer, and an associate named Karlie came to the window. My mother interacted with her at first, giving her the prescription and my birthdate. She demanded us to verify our home address and our phone number and demanded to see an ID. It wasn't so much her request for the information, it was the tone in her voice when she asked. She was just plain rude and absolutely unpleasant.

I have gotten prescriptions filled here before after many late night ER visits, including a few for narcotic pain medications. I was never asked to supply an ID, usually just a "Have you gotten prescriptions here before?" and "Are you waiting for this or coming back?" Maybe an occasional, "Do you have any allergies?" General pharmacy stuff.

I did not have my purse or any ID on me at the time, and my mother offered to show her ID, as our last names and home addresses match. She said it was not good enough, that she would allow it this time but she NEEDS ID each and every time. I don't know how many times I have been there and gotten a prescription pain medication and I have never once been asked to supply my ID.

We offered to go back to my house and get my ID, and she said she didn't need it now and it wasn't required, but before it was company policy.

She said, "We need to be cautious. People are more likely to commit fraudulent activities at night. There have been major crackdowns on narcotic pain medications due to people abusing it."

I found that kind of ironic, seeing as fraud can just as easily be committed during the daytime as well. I'm not sure if it's paranoia or what, but perhaps she should not be on the night shift.

She also said, "You would get into trouble with the police. If they pulled you over and you had that script or that bottle and no ID, you would get in trouble with the police."

She told us if we wanted to wait, we could pull into the dark parking lot next door by a hardware store. Karlie said it would take 10 minutes unless she was interrupted, but then it would take longer.

We went back to my home and got my ID and came back to get my medication. Karlie was waiting on a customer and was smiling, saying thank you, have a nice day, etc etc. When that customer was gone, she treated us with rudeness and nonchalance.

I gave her my ID, and she asked to verify my address again after seeing my ID and after us verifying it in the drive thru. She kept snipping back, "It's company policy, we have to!"

My mother wrote her name down, and she said "Yes. My name is Karlie. Is there anything else I can do for you?" and I asked her for her manager's name.

She looked at me and said, "I felt like I've offended you in some way...?"

My mother and I told her we did not appreciate the treatment in the store or in the drive thru. She seemed extremely arguementative and began to raise her voice. She kept saying that every pharmacist was different, but her way was absolute company policy. We received no apology and she did not show any remorse for the way she treated us.

I work in customer service, have been for six years. I've dealt with my share of crappy customers. I know what it's like to be crapped on in a thankless job with bad pay and terrible hours. I go out into public and I try and treat other people in the field with respect, kindness, and friendliness because I was taught to treat others the way I would like to be treated.

I felt like she was accusing me and my mother of doing illegal activities. All I could think was "What is she accusing us of?" I felt like I was treated with absolutely no respect or even common human decency. I felt like my mother and I were treated like drug abusers or dealers or both. She talked down to us like we were somehow lower than her, like we were criminals or the scum of the Earth.

I wonder if anyone who brings in a narcotic pain medication script to Walgreens is treated like a criminal.

I insist, please please please! Do not do business with Walgreens. Their customer service is absolutely disgusting. Please spend your money at a competitor or a mom and pop pharmacy. Don't give your money to them.

Yes, it is a felony to have possession of a narcotic prescription, any rx really, that does not belong to you but that doesn't apply here....If they had been stopped by police and she did not have ID to verify the rx was hers they would have confiscated it and gave her 24-48 hours to go to the police station with an ID to retrieve her medication...The pharmacist was also wrong that the ID had to be for the person in which the rx was written for. The recording of ID is so if a patient says they didn't pick up an rx the pharmacy has a record of who did, also to prevent addicts from trying to claim "I never picked up my rx". Now, the patient can request that it is dictated in their pharmacy profile that ID is required to pick up any prescriptions for this patient or that prescriptions, especially controlled substances, be picked up only by patient or their spouse Mr. XYZ for example. This usually comes into play when pill poppin/pill slinging granddaughter has picked up grammies Oxycontin rx without authorization.

Now IMHO the act of verifying ID with DOB and address is asking for trouble, how hard is it to obtain that info??? I think ID should be required for all rx pick ups or a password at least. You can't buy cigarettes without ID but you can walk out of a pharmacy with a very potent, potentially deadly bottle of pills....If people are doing nothing wrong they should have no issue showing ID...

My experience:::::: Walgreens had been my pharmacy for years, I worked an odd shift and got off at 3am so I could swing by after work...I went to pick up my rx's Opana, Percocet, Xanax, Elavil, Neurontin, Ditropan, Dolobid. on 10/15/08..I had been on this combo for 3 years and yes 3 are controlled substances....I had picked up my rx, all of them, on the same day, all at one time for over 1 and a half years. Well, I get my rx and there are only 4. I ask about my other three which were the controlled substances and am told I picked them up 3 days prior 10/12/08......Needless to say wasn't me....I asked who they were given to b/c my profile say I am the only one to pick up rx's and the girl starts to panic....Somehow my ID number was added to the bottom of that days log..Looks funny right, someone didn't ask for ID, pulled the controlled log for that day and scribbled my id number onto the bottom....Funny thing is my purse was stolen on 10/09/08 and had my ID, the purse was recovered with my ID on 10/11/08 but was being held as evidence ( so no way the person who stole it looked like me and passed my stolen ID to get my rx's b/c the police had possession of it on the day the rx was picked up). My new ID I had was issued the same day I tried to pick up my rx 10/15..

Bottom line, they released my controlled substances to someone without ID and tried to cover their tracks, thank God the polce had my ID or I would have been screwed...Had to fight with my ins to recover them b/c they are very expensive rx's and went into withdrawal b/c I went without meds for 2 days as all documentation was being given to my doc, they have a no replacement rule for meds but made an exception b/c of the proof I had that it was a pharmacy mistake. The person who released the rx without ID was fired. I got 500 in gift cards and Walgreens is covering my rx's for 6 months, well my copays which are 50 on some meds....Moral of the story.....Put it in your profile that ID is required to pick up your meds, and if at anytime they fail to do so, even if it is you they don't ask for it from, go all the way to corporate..You don't want your stolen rx making it into the hands of some high school kid that is looking for a buzz and end up in an eternal nod, do you?

I just got off the phone with the store manager and he was extremely apologetic for the incident. He checked my prescription in the computer, said there was absolutely nothing wrong with it, and that it should not have been questioned. Apprently the woman in question is a floater incase someone calls out or has to take a leave of absence for a while and that her behavior is not the standard he sets in his store. He said yes, they need to be careful with people committing fraud, but that their first job is to look out for the patient.

When I informed him of her mentioning 'fraud at night' and 'problems with the police,' he asked me what she was insinuating. I felt like he understood my hurt and my frustration. He told me he will be talking to her later tonight about it and will be following up with coroprate and his district.

He treated me with respect and common courtesy, which is what I wanted all along.

I may return here after finding out she is not a regular and after the outstanding way the pharmacy manager treated me when I spoke to him.

Yes, maybe she is concerned about kids recreationally abusing narcotic pain medication. However I do not abuse drugs, I do not deal drugs, and I do not appreciate the attitude from her. There is a vast difference between being cautious and downright lecturing someone you have no place to.

Every time I have been there before that was smooth. Name, DOB, Allergies, Going to wait? I was never once talked down to or harassed by the staff.

I'm pretty sure it is a federal offense about the narcotics. I get a nice little warning label on the sides of my bottle. But I'm not committing any crimes that this pharmacist believed I am committing, so why does she even need to mention the police?

You're not the only one who works in customer service. Go back and read and I have been in it for six years. I am one of those types that adheres to policy when everyone else doesn't care. I know how you do and don't treat people, and I also don't waltz into a business expecting to be given anything and everything I want because those type of people nauseate and infuriate me. I expect to be treated fairly.

I hope they do still have jobs. One pharmacist who you claim was 'lax on their job' helped save me from a potentially dangerous situation with an antibiotic. Doc prescribed one from a family of antibiotics I am allergic to, she said she wasn't going to fill it for my safety. Maybe it just teaches me to avoid the night shift and to go during the day where the staff are professional and not rude.

Yes, I am sensitive to it because I am in pain. Because I am in pain and seeking relief, it shouldn't make me a criminal or an addict. If I had my choice I wouldn't be on this crap and I would be out there living my life. I'm stuck on the pain medication until I can get operated on so I can get better, pain free, and go on with my life. Maybe you need to look at the type of people you hang out with if they abuse pills and take them with alcohol.

I don't even understand how someone could abuse it. It makes me nausated and throw up. I used to lead a very active lifestyle until I got sick, and all this crap does is make me lay in bed.

I am a legit person in pain trying to go through the process so I can go without the pain medication. I don't appreciate judgement from that lady, and I don't appreciate judgement from you.

It's wonderful that you have had such good experiences with Wallgreens. I had absolutely no complaints and extraordinary customer service with this location until the night in question.

And because of the treatment of that woman, I refuse to patronize Wallgreens and I am encouraging every single person I know not to do business there either.

This experience has made me never want to set foot into another one. Even if I was desperate. Even if they were the only pharmacy open at that time of night. I'd rather suffer and wait and patronize a business that doesn't treat their customers like criminals.

If you want to keep going there, that's fine. What you do with your own money is your own business. I frankly don't care. I wouldn't even care if you worked for them. Good on you.

I prefer to do business with people who don't crap on their customers and treat them disrespectfully. I work too hard for my money to give it to businesses that employ people like that.

Maybe this woman is genuinely concerned about young people using pain medicine recreationally, and she is doing her very best to be cautious. It doesn't sound like she did anything out of the ordinary to YOU but it seems like this is your first time dealing with someone who does her job adhering to company policy. As someone who works in customer service, who has to please the "always right" customer, I got annoyed when I was new to a store whose previous employees were very lax about the rules and they would give me a hard time about following policy. I wonder if the people you were used to dealing with even still have jobs. Narcotic laws are very serious. Isn'lt it a a felony to be caught with ppills like that that are not yours? in my experience, the customers that gave me a hard time about how I mistreated them, were doing something strnge like writing hot checks, so now when people are being sensitive, I kinda think they might be up to something. I do not work for walgreens, nor a pharmacy. I have known people addicted to pills, and they are really killers on those who drink alcohol with them. Bad stuff, all the kids are getting hhooked on stuff, its really sad.

I have never had anything but good experiences with Walgreen. The people I have dealt with have been very friendly and helpful.

Of course, now will come the accusations that I work for them. LOL
