Three years ago, I was looking for a technician to outsource certain specialized electronics repairs and Ashley Fernandez came highly recommended by none other than Sandra Philips from Smart Shopping Montreal.

His shop was a 15 minute drive from LaSalle and I couldn't go there often myself, but Ashley would occasionally come to my shop for repair orders and repair parts, either expressly to see me or on his way to other suppliers (whom I had put him in touch with in the first place).

At first, things went well. The items in questions were checked by him and his staff, a free estimate was given and if agreed upon, was promptly and professionally repaired.

Then later, things stareted to go south. His assisant techie and delivery guy Jean-Luc had quit without warning and the level of customer service I was receiving had noticeable declined. He started charging an estimatation fee, first on TVs (not just Plasma TVs but LCD and LED TVs as well) which he told me about in advance, and then he'd add an estimation fee on all electronics repairs retroactively. When I protested he waived them but then said that from now on all repairs would be charged an estimation fee, this he announced on speakphone so that his staff would bear witness.

Things came to a head in the the summer of 2020, when I went in to pick up three Toshiba LED TVs and a Paradigm subwoofer from his store. The subwoofer was supposed to cost me $90.00 to fix, but there were complications (the circuit board had a short which burned out the new parts he installed) which led to cost over runs, bringing the bill to $250.00 tax included. Instead of telling me in advance, I only found out when I was coming over to pick them up. He told me to charge the customer $280.00 since the subwoofer was worth $300.00. Needless to say, my customer wasn't pleased and I was lucky to break even.

He did not give me a receipt. As a matter of fact, when I issue with one of the TV repairs, he admittedly didn't mark down the model and serial number of the TV in question. I found this odd, but I guess I trusted him too much and bacame too complacent. When he couldn't the TV for the second time, he promised to refund me $90.00 but I corrected him saying that the repair cost me $150.00 and I had the notes to back me up. No argument from him but he didn't have the money on him.

On top of all that, the repair only lasted a couple of weeks, after which the customer (now even less pleased) brough back the subwoofer to be repaired under warranty. I brought it back to him within the warranty period and this time he couldn't fix it.

When it came time to start ttalking refund, I mentioned the $250.00 it had cost me. He then balked and said that he had never charged anyone that muich for a subwoofer repair. He talked to his colleagues and came up with a receipt for $150.00 signed by his techie.

This is patently untrue and it's fraudulent. He's laying himself wide open to civil liability and criminal prosecution. Anybody signing their name to this would also be guilty under the law.

This was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back, confirming other suspicions I've had before; namely a slide projector that he charged me $150.00 to fix...twice. He had fixed it in the Spring of 2020 and brought it home with him in Ville St. Laurent and then brought it to my store the next morning before heading off to work. He had forgotten to bring me the receipt. It had to be fixed under warranty and I got it back, but only when I was picking up the TVs and the subwoofer in the Summer of that year did he remember the receipt and then claim that this bill wasn't paid. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, I paid for this along with the other stuff.

Now I have the proof that he's been intentionally defrauding me. Other revelations, such as a vintage Pioneer amp that he looked at a year ago and claimed to have fixed but was later found to have never been serviced (my customer had abandoned it and I had to wait to find a potential buyer and get it appraised) are only the icing on the cake.

Luckily he took pictures of the machine, outside (showing the Fix "R" Us warranty seal and the model and serial number) and inside (showing the original components with no soldering work done and the tiny broken microphone input wire which was the original fault). If this goes to court, I will use this and other documentation and sworn affidavits from any material witnesses (and even subpoenas of past and present employees and associates) to prove his intent to criminally defraud me.

In summary, he ripped me off and I want a full refund for the Toshiba LED TV ($150.00), the Paradigm subwoofer ($250.00), the slide projector ($150.00), the return of said subwoofer intact (even if still defective) and I won't press charges against him nor sue him in court, even if other instances of fraud, theft or wrongoing subsequently come to light. Unlike him, I'm a man of my word. Failure to immedately comply will get the police and quite possibly the legal system involved.
