It seems that If you buy an A/C Compressor from them (and Other places) you have to buy another $40 worth of parts and have them put on for the warranty on the Compressor to be any good.

What they dont tell you is that if you dont buy those extra parts and put them on the Compressor WILL go bad and almost immediately.

I called to talk to the manager thinking that since the part was only used for ten miles that they would replace it for free.

Nope!

Heres where my complaint becomes valid.

I said: "I was sold a junk part. It only lasted ten miles."

Manager said: "99.9 percent of the customers that dont buy those extra parts end up buying another compressor. One of the extra parts traps the metal shavings that ruin the compressor, without it those metal shavings go where they please. You would go through at least four compressors before getting all the metal shavings out."

So it is obvious that Advance Auto Parts knows this is going to happen. But they don't care because they just made twice as much as they should have. And apparently sometimes four times as much. How else would he know that it would take that many compressors.

A/C compressor warranties

AUTHOR: BKREX - (USA)

POSTED: Sunday, August 23, 2009

Commpressors do not always go bad if the accumulator/receiver-drier and orifice tube/expansion valve are not replaced but the odds are probably about 66% chance of it going bad. You had two problems with your purchase:

1. The reason the person selling you the comressor did not say anything is most likely that they did not know about the warranty requirments of an A/C compressor. I was once an assistant manager for an Advance auto parts in PA and I can tell you that most employees do not have a great deal of automotive knowledge. I don't think that it was dishonesty but more of an honest mistake.

2. A/C systems should not be serviced by someone without the appropriate knowledge and tools. If you try to service a system yourself more times than not it will cost you more than having a qualified garage install it for you in the first place.

"It seems that If you buy an A/C Compressor from them (and Other places) you have to buy another $40 worth of parts and have them put on for the warranty on the Compressor to be any good."

So, it seems that they told you this beforehand and you decided to go the cheap route. The big tipoff here is that they openly tell you that there will be no warranty unless you do the job right. Anyone who knows what they're doing will replace the accumulator, drier, orifice tube and expansion valve when replacing a compressor.

"So it is obvious that Advance Auto Parts knows this is going to happen."

This is where you lose me. Of course they know it's going to happen. They told you when you originally bought the compressor. You chose not to listen and take your chances with a voided warranty. I suggest in the future that you let someone who knows what they're doing work on your car. It's a lot cheaper in the long run.
