I called the clinic to get a price and appointment for rabies shots for my two dogs. Yellow Pages ad promises free exam for first time customers. Though the Yellow Page offer did not mention free exam for one dog only, I was told I would be charged for the second dog.

Though there was only one other customer in the clinic, I was left waiting over an hour before being attended. I believe it was because I was asking for the free exams and rabies shots only.

When the assistant approached me, I asked what it would cost for the full set of shots and was told it would be an additional $50/dog. I asked if the shots were for three years and the answer was affirmative. I agreed to have both dogs receive all the shots. When Dr. Ahmed came in to give the one free exam he said I he wanted to draw blood for testing. I thought that was part of the exam but to be safe, I asked if it was included in the exam. He replied that there would be an additional charge of $165. I declined. He frowned and left the room leaving me to cool my heels for another fifteen minutes. Finally I left the dogs in the exam room and asked the receptionist why the delay.

Finally, another assistant entered the room, administered the shots, and then informed me that I would have to return three more times at a cost of

What you have described is standard operating procedure for vets. If you call the office, the receptionist will give you exactly the information your request. The receptionist will not volunteer additional information because the potential client will then begin to ask about prices. The goal is to quote you a low price so that you will come into the office. Once you are in the office, you will be asked to submit to any number of tests or procedures, but they won't tell you the cost unless you ask. Evidently, there appears to be a new trend of not insulting the clients by mentioning money.

Re: blood tests. Your vet cannot prescribe heartworm prevention medication without first testing the dog for heartworms. That test does not cost anywhere near $165. That test costs $20 at the animal wellness clinic in my area. For $165, you should get a complete blood workup, but you only need that if your dog is ill or very old.

Re: returning three more times. That sounds like the standard protocol for puppy shots. They get boosters.
