I have several accounts with Bank of America and over the past few years I have seen the nature of how they treat customers. To start with the first credit card I received from them was good for the first year and a half. They increased my limit for being such a good customer. Well due to going through a divorce I used the card for personal reasons to help me and my kids adjust to a new life. During that time I was never late, never missed a payment and usually paid above the minimum requirement. Once I got about a thousand dollars within my limit they sent me a letter advising that I need to send a letter in writing agreeing to stop using the card to keep it at the current rate which was already above prime or they would increase my rate to 31 percent. So feeling puzzled I called and spoke with an account manager for an explanation. I was advised you are a great customer but we decided to make changes to your account to help you bring the balance of your account back down. I asked him how is that possible if your trying to increase the interest and make my payments higher. He said if I wrote the letter and stop using the card until the balance comes down, then I can call back to get a better rate then the current amount. So I wrote the letter and have not used the card.

Well since then I brought the balance down a couple thousand dollars and then they cut the limit which has effected my credit score because it puts me close to the limit again. Why do that if it is an account I already agreed not to use. This experience has shown me in my opinion they increase your limit to bait you to use more of it only to justify them increasing interest rates for more profits. It's like punishing you for using the limit they approved you for.Good old bait and switch. To me it seems like they are using profiling to justify deceptive practices. If they feel you fall within a certain computer criteria they use it against you. The whole time never taking accountability with assisting the average consumer to become delinquent to slap you with even more fees. Oh yeah they cut the limit on my other account saying it was my payment history because I was not paying the balance down fast enough. I thank them for exposing themselves and showing that being consumer friendly is just not profitable.

P.S. In case someone tries to say I'm just mad because of financial concerns. I am not behind on any of my bills and just pulled my credit report. There are no delinquent marks on any of my accounts and even though I went through a divorce I always pay my bills on time.

This is currently very common with a lot of banks, because they want to lower their exposure to any more "possible" bad debt.

You have to remember this is not your money. They are agreeing to lend you up to a certain amount. As such they can also take away that privledge at any time and for any reason. They didn't force you to run up your balances, and they don't care the reason why you did. They didn't increase your limit and force you to use it, that was your choice. They gave you a higher limit and you were able to start a new life.

Here is a question for you. What if that credit line was not there in the first place? What would you have done? Would you have done without x,y or z that the Credit Card actually bought? Did you have other things you could have done?

Now, things that tends to cause banks to close your account, increase your rate or lower your credit limit.

1. Inactivity on the card for more than a few months.
2. Paying the minimum, or only a small percentage above the minimum, on a consistant basis
3. Running your balance up, again they don't care the reason why.
