Ashley is Correct

AUTHOR: IceAngel - (USA)

POSTED: Tuesday, July 31, 2012

Ashley is correct in that it's the bank charging the 30.00 NSF.  Call the bank or check your statement from the bank and you will see that.

The Overdraft protection is there so that the business will be paid and you won't be charged a nsf from the business.  Basically the "overdraft" money is the banks and you will have to pay it back as well.

To simplify it..

You owe business.... 50.00       You only have 35.00 in account. The overdraft pays that 15.00.

Now you are in deficit... 15.00 plus 30.00 NSF.   You have to pay both amts to the bank.

The protection is there so you won't pay extra fees to the store in return check charges or if you use your debit you will still get your goods.

It's not a free money service.

I know this because my Mom got into a mess with it.  She didn't know it worked that way.

She had 500.00 overdraft protection. One month she "bounced" a check..it was paid but they took  25.00 NSF(back then it was cheaper). The check was for 130.00.  So out of her 500. overdraft amt..they took the 130.00. Plus the 25.00.  When her checks came in they automatically took out the 155.00 which put the overdraft back up to the 500.00 amt but left her short to pay bills...so she had to use that overdraft to pay a bill. It was an cycle that she was stuck in.  I helped pay a bill for her to get her out of that cycle.

The overdraft is a good thing to have, but you still have to pay it back.

Store?

The store isnt charging you an NSF fee. Your bank is charging you an NSF fee. Anytime you "dip" in to your overdraft protection your bank will charge you an NSF fee. if you look at the paperwork from your bank its all detailed there.

No ripoff here, this store did nothing wrong.
