I purchased a 24 month unlimited miles warranty on a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado for $800 from my dealer and the warranty was written through CARS. Twenty months later and only 10,000 miles later the transmission went out. I towed the vehicle to a reputable Chevy dealer and they contacted CARS. The dealer said they have never worked with an extended warranty company as strict and with as poor of coverage as this company.
The dealer said that CARS would only authorize a used transmission from a vehcile that has over 79,000 miles on it to be used. The replacement part had to be sent from Ohio and it would take a week to get the part.
CARS refused to pay the normal $75/hr rate at the dealer and would only pay $50/hr and that I was responsible for the extra. I also had to pay the cost to "tear down" the transmission, flush the transmission and pay for all seals, etc. They would only pay for the "very used" parts and the $50/hr to put it back together.
CARS refused to provide a rental car (even though the vehicle will be out of service for over a week). They said they will only pay if it takes over 8 hours to repair. The time to repair my vehicle (according to Mitchell's labor guide) takes 7.8 hours. Isn't that convenient.
It will cost me approximately another $600 - $800 to fix the tranmission on top of the $800 I paid for the warranty. The cost of the used transmission they are buying is $900.
They also said that the only warranty that I will receive is just the remaining 4 months that I have on the warranty. However, if they put in a new transmission the warranty would be for the life of the vehicle.
This company is not consumer friendly and their contracts are written so that the average consumer would think they are purchasing something of value, when in fact it is almost worthless and a huge Rip-Off.

Beware the Dealer

After market warranties are not perfect.......and dealers love to condemn them. Similar to this author, I have CARS extended warrantly. Similar to this author, I took my car (CL500 Mercedes) to a local dealer, as result of wheel bearing problems.
The dealer checked on my warranty and told me it was garbage. Claimed I would pay about $750 out of pocket for each side. Claimed the part alone was $200 per side (and CARS would only pay $50 per side for parts) and the warranty wouldn't come anywhere near covering the labor.
Went to an independent. He bought nationally respect bearings for the rear wheels at $50 per side. Fully covered by extended warranty. He also performed the labor within the estimate for coverage by CARS. My out of pocket for the dealer would have been around $1500-1600. My out of pocket with the independent was $100. The operative word for "abuse" in both my experience and the author with the Chevy is....Dealer repair....or more properly termed, dealer ripoff.
Sure, CARS isn't perfect, nor are the new car warranties...they all have exclusions and limitations. But the extended warranty, such as CARS, is reasonable and there for the catastrophic problems....as long as you don't take it to a dealer.
