My car has now been in the shop for 3 days and I am still waiting on CARS to call the shop back. The technician looked at the differential and saw that it was damaged very badly. He quickly found a suitable used part at a nearby wrecking yard and called to tell me that he could get it right away and have the car ready to go by the end of the day. It was a good fair price also. $750 for a rear differential for a 2002 honda s2000 that had 20,000 miles on it.

Instead of just paying for it, CARS told him to tear it down and give a detailed estimate on how much it would cost to repair it. He told CARS that that was not necessary because he could see that it was badly damaged and that it would take time to put this estimate together. CARS said do it anyway and they told him that I would pay for his time to tear it down!!

After tearing it down he sent back an estimate of over $3,000 to repair it. I callled CARS and asked them to just pay for the used part. CARS then said, "Not until we find one from one of our suppliers." Two days later they still have not even called him back. I finally had to email the shop and tell them to get the part themselves and just fix it. I then proceeded to see if anyone else had the same trouble from CARS and found that several others had the same experience.

Only Paid $500 of the $1300 charge

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, March 30, 2008

CARS did finally call back my mechanic. They told him they found a rear differential for $500. I searched everywhere and couldn't find one for under $750. I would imagine the part they found was a piece of junk, just like the 2 transmissions that I read about from another unhappy CARS customer. CARS called me and said that If I elected to use the part that my mechanic found that they would only pay 500 of the 750. Also, my mechanic spent 4 hours at $85 per hour (a very reasonable rate). CARS only pays $45 per hour (which is listed in the warranty) but they only paid 2 hours for the job! This is another way that they rip you off. They have their own guide which seems to be less hours than what it truly takes to do the job.

So, with the $100 deductible and only paying half the appropriate hours, I get to pay for $800 of the $1300 bill. Some warranty huh. Since CARS can just pay for the lowest possible part they can find in the US and they have their own guide on what it takes to do a job they can pretty much pay you whatever they decide and you have pay the rest. These guys should be put out of business.
