My boyfriend and I were looking for a child custody lawyer in our area, Fairfax VA. I came across the website for Family Legal Help who advertised themselves as a Father's Rights website, specializing in family issues. Based on testimonials on the website, they seemed to be legitimate, caring, and exactly what we needed, affordable legal help for someone fighting for rights to their child.
I entered our information for a representative to contact me. I was contacted by Dave Aarons in California, who took my boyfriends information, got the details of the case, and offered 2 solutions, both of which included setting us up with a local attorney. The first option was $700 for a lawyer to write legal documents which he would present at court, explain what to expect on his court date, and answer any legal questions/give advice. The 2nd option was for a lawyer to do everything from option 1, but also come to court with him on his court date. This would be a flat rate of $3000.
We chose the first option, seeing as the whole point was to be affordable. After my boyfriend signed up for the initial membership fee of $180 (red flag) , he was emailed a questionnaire regarding his involvement with his child, what he wanted out of the case such as visitation schedule, activities he did with his child, what kind of a role model he was, etc. He emailed the questionnaire back and was contacted by a lawyer in Texas (2nd flag, we live in VA). This lawyer answered questions my boyfriend had, but did not provide accurate advice as we later found out. The 'Affidavit' we were emailed was HORRIBLY written, incorrect grammer, incomplete sentences, parts were clearly cut/paste from his questionnaire, and mis representation of facts or just plain wrong.
Although disappointed with what $700 bought us, we took it as a lesson learned and sent an email cancelling the membership. Apparently the email was not the correct way to cancel membership, because a $39.99 charge was deducted from his account. After contacting Dave Aarons, we were emailed with the proper way to cancel a memebership which included a WRITTEN letter to the billing department. I mailed the written letter canceling our membership to the address provided by the company which was Center For Legal Help- Central Billing, 827 State St Suite 6, Santa Barbara, CA 93101.
Two weeks later I open my mailbox and there is the cancellation letter I mailed with a sticker from U.S. Postal Service 'Return to Sender, Attempted- Not Known, Unable to Forward'. I immediately Google'd the company only to find the name was changed, website redone, and web address different, although all similar to the original.
