Been a customer at Charter One for 10 years. Went to the bank on a Saturday with a $500 check that was a gift from a family member for our baby shower. Went up to the teller and told him that we wanted to cash the check. We did not fill out a deposit slip or give him our account number. He took the check and gave us the $500. We had gone shopping and bought baby stuff that same day. I usually check the balance in our account everyday but that week my husbands mother was in hospice passing away, so I did not have a chance to get online and check the account. Well Finally that Thursday my husband got online and saw that it was -$300 and something.

We called to figure out what had happened and here it goes...

The teller actually deposited the check into the account without telling us and on top of that didn't inform us that there would be a 24 hour hold on it.

So we actually received $500 of the $700 that was in our account making our new balance $200

That Friday the day before we cashed the check I had paid a whole lot of bills and they posted on Saturday when the balance was only $200. Resulting in (14)... $37 OD fees
plus $6.99 for each day it was overdrawn..overall we lost around $600

I called and called customer service, who said that I would receive a call within 48 hrs, but did not receive a call back for 16 days. Made the claim on 2/12/11, and finally received a call on 2/28/11. Talked to the bank manger and all they kept saying it wasn't a bank error. When we finally did receive a call back we had already paid the OD fees and closed the account.  The lady said even if there was anything she could do the account was closed now.

It's amazing that a bank could be so shady! They said that the policies and procedures are in the terms and conditions.....who actually reads them???? Really mad that the teller didn't tell us that the money was coming out of our account and that the 500 check was being deposited instead of cashed and put on hold.

Never open an account at Charter One they don't care about their customers! If you have an account consider this and close it! They don't deserve your business!

No bank just hands you money for a check, without requiring some kind of hold against the funds you have in your account. You may not have made out a deposit slip, but I assume you had to provide some kind of proof of having an account there, like a bank card. Ergo, they didn't need a deposit slip; they obviously knew what account to hold the funds against. And every check requires a set period of time to clear. That's been common knowledge to anyone keeping money in a bank for generations. Until you bank is assured by the bank the check was drawn from, that the check is valid, you don't really have that money in your account to use. Banks do a lot of nasty things, but this is one that should have been expected, and was not out of line. Suggest opting out of all overdraft arrangements.

Yes. Use a register for every transaction, no matter how well you know the person or how small the amount is.

Even for social transactions, you should keep a precise record for every word uttered - even if the conversation was about the weather.  When you send a Christmas Card to a friend or family member, photocopy it.  If you don't there's a chance you may have sent them pornography - or at least they'll be able to say you sent them pornography. 

Because that's what the banks have turned this into.  It's about being able to f**k over your fellow man.  Finders Keepers, Losers Weepers, et al.  So f**k courtesy and yield to contempt.  Let go of your assumptions concerning etiquette and good faith and, instead, just assume that every moment of your life must be spent in a state of toxic resentment mixed with an over-arching, paranoid hyper-vigilance.

That felt so good, Vaporize!  Do you think I helped make the OP feel stupid for trusting people? It must be your altitude causing my blood to boil.

Just common sense.

The bottom line here is that you were not paying attention.nd you did not use common sense.This was an example of poor communication on your part.

If you had been with that bank for 10 years as you claim, you would have had a "seasoned" account and there would have been no hold on that small check.
This tells me that you are frequently overdrawn on that account, or have been some time in the past.That was the real reason for the hold on a small check.

Tellers do not need a deposit slip from you to make a deposit.You had an account 10 years, right? Maybe the teller knew your name, and looked up the account.Your name was also the payee on the check, right?

Again, just common sense.Most banks only cash checks for customers.That should have been a clue as well.You are obviously clueless.

Use a register they are easy to use just add and subtract.  Online banking is not accurate as well delayed on certain transactions. 24 hrs. is the standard for checks. Since it was Saturday, which is not a business day Sunday banks are closed Monday the check would be processed, and cleared Tuesday.  Every time you make a transaction at the bank ask for the current balance on the account pertaining to the transaction.

That sucks that you gotta pay for that retarded tellers mistake.  And the weasel-a*s bank manager is such a coward and lowlife that she isn't going to do A THING for you, THEIR CUSTOMER!

Its really possible that that's what the tellers have been instructed to do, in order to STEAL MORE MONEY!


That's why I just found 124 reports on em today!

Post the bank manager's name on here,  we'll see what we can do. Post her address and personal information as well, if you have it.  If not, I can get it.
