I had cell phone service with Pacific Bell, who then sold it or renamed it as Cingular. After some time, Cingular sold roughly half of their cell towers to T-Mobile in return for T-Mobile doing the same for Cingular in New York, letting both companies expand their coverage.

Once Cingular did that, I suddendly had no service at all anywhere near my home where I always used it previously. They refused to respond to complaints. Even their sales office near me had no service at all, and was unable to get their company to do anything about it.

I was in the 2nd year of a two year contract, which I refused to pay for any further as I had no service. I was unable to get them to understand why even though I called and wrote them. Eventually they turned it over to a collection agency in Texas -- Plano I think. A computer calls me periodically bugging me to pay, even though I notified them in writing to cease contacting me about it.

Worse still, they have put a notice on my credit report claiming I owe them $300.00 -- but I don't care if it's only for $0.03 I won't pay this company a dime -- they are an awful company to do business with. Even the local newspaper action line said they had the worst customer service of anywhere, and they had received thousands of complaints about them.

Incidentally after cancelling with Cingular, I started service with T-Mobile, who had a very strong signal near my home, and which has been a good company to do business with. Obviously the cell tower near me was one that Cingular sold to T-Mobile.

share towers

Correct me if I am wrong....Doesn't T-mobile, Cingular and Cellular One all share towers...so if your not getting signal on a Cingular Tower (if that was what was next to you) then you would be picking up a T-mobile tower....Again, I could be wrong...also ever think that it could be your phone also? If there is the same tower in town...and you all of a sudden dont get service...cancel...get with t-mobile...get a NEW phone...same tower has not moved yet in your town...and now you get service....

just something to think about

also in your contract with cingular..and again correct me if I am wrong because I know pretty much every cell company puts this in the contract to save their butts...."We can not guaruntee 100% service" meaning and I am going to put this in plain simple terms "If your not able to use your phone because the coverage sucks...that is not our fault because you signed a contract and that contract says sorry if coverage sucks we cant guaruntee that it will be great but you are STUCK with us for 2 years" That is why your Eary Termination Fee's (ETF) would be valid because they did state in the contract they couldn't guaruntee your service.....

It is a harsh world with Cell companies and they are all the same no matter where you go...

Good luck!
