I have tried time after time to get my dell computer as well as my dell 720 printer ownership transfered to myself only to have these request go unanswered by Dell because I don't know who the previous owner is or was.
I feel that this is not fair to myself or anyone else who buys a dell computer second hand as I did. Now let me ask you this? Is it normal for everyone to know who owned a computer when you buy said computer from a shop or store where it was donated in the first place. Well this is what has happened to myself and now Dell does not want to do a thing to help myself get my printer up and running. Oh by the way it did take me over a year to finally get my computer ownership transfered.

Security reasons, lazy employees or Dell not wanting to respect their warranties.. the more I find out, the less I like about my Dell computers.
Sylver8248, I disagree with your comment; "In other words, if you called in to transfer ownership to yourself, and Dell's record on that service tag shows it was originally sold to an actual store, and not an individual, they would glady transfer the ownership to you." Gladly my a$$..
I bought an M1330 from Best Buy (because I had to have a computer for a conference and Dell On-Site Warranty was not fixing the problem on my old M1330 fast enough), So after I bought it, I called Dell to get the On-Site Warranty, they tell me that since the computer is not in my name, but Best Buys name, I have to call Best Buy to get a warranty. Best Buy does not sell the Dell On-Site warranty, only their own.. which I would have to bring in whenever I have a problem and leave it with them..
But, who has the time to take it in, or the time to wait, not to mention the down time of not having my work computer! I have gone back and forth between Dell & Best Buy's "Geek Squad" for the past 6-8 months.. After going round and round numerous times, I was finally told that Dell will only accept an ownership change if submitted by using their online form. I was finally able to transfer the name on the computer to my name with Dell, but now Dell says it has been too long since buying the computer to get the on-site warranty, and Best Buy says that I only had 14 days from purchase to get one! What the ???
Why the run around? If I bought it from Best Buy, and have the receipt to prove it, why was it so difficult/long to transfer the ownership? All I wanted, was to give Dell more money by buying the On-Site Warranty (which I'm not sure now why I ever wanted it in the first place). When I had the On-Site Warranty on the older M1330, I had to diagnose my own problems before they would send out the rudest repair people to only replace the "broken" parts, and if my uneducated diagnoses was incorrect, I had to spend another 2-3 hours on the phone with a Dell rep of Indian descent that could only help me if the exact problem was on their printed help card in front of them.. Again, What the ???
Sorry for rambling, but I have not had the best of treatment from Dell Support.

Only Dell does this

No other manufacturer I know of will verify owner information prior to honoring their warranty.
Why does it matter who currently owns the machine? If it is still under the warranty period, anyone should be able to get warranty service on it.
Why is Dell trying to be the police now?
This is totally stupid/ridiculous.
I also own a 2nd hand Dell that is still under warranty but I can't get any support because I don't know the name of the original owner.
I have called HP, IBM, Toshiba and numerous other computer manufacturers for warranty support and not once was I asked who the original owner was. All they do is verify the serial # is still under warranty, then send you the replacement parts you need.

Yes it is Policy that before a Ownership Transfer you must know who the previous owner was, why ? because what if it was stolen and then they were simply able to transfer ownership to themselves without the original owners knowledge, say in the case that your system was stolen and ownership was put in his name as the new owner and then you were to take him to court after finding out who it was, you would not get your computer back as it is his now by the ownership transfer, and we don't want to give tech support to someone who stole the system. (I know not the best example but its the only one I could think of)
as for the printer is it a Dell Printer, Is it In Warranty ?

I was wondering...

I wonder if their reluctance to transfer ownership without you knowing the previous owner's info is security related. They don't know if the products are legit, or stolen. Dell only sells to authorized resellers such as Best Buy and Staples, and their computer system reflects systems sold at these stores by an identifier (known as a service tag).
In other words, if you called in to transfer ownership to yourself, and Dell's record on that service tag shows it was originally sold to an actual store, and not an individual, they would glady transfer the ownership to you. Unfortunately I don't think this is all Dell...they have to protect the security of customers, especially if the new owner has no idea who previously owned the equipment (i.e. stolen).
I'm sure you did buy your computer from a legitimate business who may obtain refurbished machines...but Dell is not a mind reader.
