i switched to Dish Network in early July 2014. one month later my house flooded and I was forced to move. I put my account on pause for 2 months while we stayed with family. When I called to pause the service they said that, given my circumstances, they would give me my promotional rate when i returned. When I called to schedule the install at my new home, they jacked up my rate. The customer service people were like robots - not an ounce of compassion. I went ahead and agreed to do the install.

On October 2nd the tech came to my condo and immediately told me I could not get a signal in my location if the dish was on my deck But I could get a signal if I could put the dish on a post 10 feet out.  I called my HOA to see if alternate locations were ever approved. They said probably not. The tech called customer service who informed me that they don't care if you move and can't get a signal at your new location you are still bound by the contract. I agreed to check further with my HOA. They were nice enough to let me know later that day that they would not approve an alternate location for the dish.

I called Dish back and told them to cancel my service. I was very upset about being charged early termination fees and argued with them to no avail. the rep told me I woul be charged $440 to my card on file. I wasn't worried about it because by coincidence, I lost that card while moving and had to cancel it earlier that day.  My plan was to send them small checks every month to pay the termination fee.

I patiently waited for for the box to come for equipment. Nothing showed up. I got a couple emails saying they tried to charge my card and could not obtain authorization.

Today I received an email thanking me for my payment and showing they charged a card with the last 4 digits of my new card. I did not give them my new card and I have no idea how they got the card number!  I called my bank immediately and they are as baffled as me. They told me they have no idea how Dish could have obtained the card number and that however they did it, it was not legal for them to charge a card without my permission. I disputed the charge and had to cancel the card.

I called Dish next and asked them what was going on. They claim they have no record of me canceling my account. When I told them I disputed the charge and would be taking legal action against them, they would not comment. I repeatedly asked them how they obtained the new card number and they would not comment. They canceled my account retroactively and insisted I will still be billed for the early termination fees.
