every job is different

AUTHOR: James - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, June 16, 2009

every job is different. most customers dont care about anything but watching tv. but some customers want a little more work done and are willing to pay for the job. if i go out to an existing customer ive already done. so their is not much for me to do. when i go to upgrade the job. i usually like jobs where the house is being built and i can prewire the house. i prewired a house in just about an hour. the owner saw me putting my stuff up and asked me what i was doing. i told him i was done. i was talking to a customer today . he told me dish came out and me that dish upgrade his receiver to a dual tuner. they refused to connect his vcr. i had another customer call me told me dish sent one of their service techs pout. they told him they never saw a signal combiner and a amplifier before. then told him he didnt need it and begged me to come out and fix it. they left the customer only with the ability to only watch sat in all the rooms and i had it so he could watch sat and his antenna in all the rooms. the customer who was setup to watch tv1 , tv2 and the xm sat radio on any tv in the house. that job was a prewire. i went out and wired the house for the sat , the sat radio and the stereo system. so i got paid extra for the installation beyond the dish network install. what i do is really not that hard to do. at one time i had alot of dealer i used to do work for . who always called me for advise. i got one customer who who has a 522 and a 625 in the bedroom. you know what coming dont you. i fixed it so he could watch all 4 tuners on any tv in the house. his son has a 722 and a 222 and i fixed it so he could watch all for tuners and the dvd player and the local tv antenna in any room in the house. the sons in laws have a 722 and a 222. i did the same thing they can watch all 4 tuner, the dvd player and the local tv antenna in anyroom in the house. i got a customer with a c band system. i used a signal combiner to mix the sat and the tv antenna together. then split the signal to the living room and the bed room. then in the bedroom i used a signal combiner to separate the signal from the living room . then the antenna went to the dtv box. the channel 3 went to the input of a second combiner. then i took the channel 4 output of the dtv box to the antenna input of the second signal combiner. so she can watch sat on channel 3 and the dtv box on channel 4. this way she can watch sat and record the digital local thru the vcr by setting the record channel in the vcr to channel 4 . then setting the dtv box to the local channel she wants to record. i like doing the impossible. but now matter how simple i make the install. most installer cant even make them work. yes dish network pays for a standard install. but anything beyond that you can charge for. i got a job that i did. the customer has a c band, sky angel and a tv antenna. dish net installer went out screwed it up. 4 months later they came out and removed the dish net. because they couldnt fix it. so i go out and fix the mess. then a month later the customer is calling me that directv came out and screwed it up. they sent out 4 service guys out and couldnt fix it. they couldnt fix it. i give a oone year because i dont have to worry about my work. yes imake mistakes and pay for them. butin the long run when its done right. i usually dont have to go back. except for equipment problems which is not that often. i was an air traffic control radar repairman, worked for pts electronics repairing tv's, worked for a company called base com working on c band equipment. while doing the dish net stuff . i was helping a friend installing tornado sirens for federal signal. ive been in the sat work for 25 years. like i say i enjoy doing the impossible........

dish requires me to give you a 6 month installation warranty. but i gave you a 1 year warranty when i installed you system. when i got done with the install originally she could watch her dual tuner tv1 and tv2 . on any tv in the house and also listen to the xm satellite radio on any tv. when i left this last time i installed her dvd player so she could watch it on any tv in the house.so now she can go to any tv watch tv1 ,tv2,dvd player, listen to xm radio and her local tv antenna on every tv in the house.

how can you make any money? i dont understand you average 1 install a week and do all this work

hold on card

when the dealer enters your info into dish networks computer. during the process a soft scan credit check is done and a reserve of 10 dollars is put onto the consumers card. now dish network as always told us they are not the one to release the reserve on the card. that its the card company that does that and it varies from credit card companies. that we are to tell the customer it could take anywhere from 3 to 30 days for the reserve to be released. now the standard install is that the dish is mounted onto the house and the coax goes thru the outside wall no matter where the tv is located in the room. it has been that way since before directv came out with there equipment. fishing inner walls and palnting pole in the ground would be considered outside the guide lines and the dealer could charge extra for that . i have the dealer manual on that. now the manual is just a guide line.if the dealer doesnt wanted to not charge for that .then the dealer could include the planting of the pole and fishing inner walls has part of the install they could. a dealer never knows what he is getting into before they show up. if they have to dig a hole to plant the pole. they are required by most states to call into dig test to get it cleared first. alot of times i go out to do a site survey first. before i do the installation. why waste the cutomers time if i cant even install the satellite system. it doesnt matter how big of a hurry the cutomer is in. it has to be done right. see if you dont call into dig test and you cut some underground cable your a@# is grass. anywhere from a huge fine to prison time. a contractor cut a underground fiber optic cable in texas and it cost him 1.4 million dollars....sucks doesnt it. it best for both parties to call in an get a job number before any work is done. if the dealer comes out and as a job number to dig then leaves when the job is finished. the home owner cant go out and dig trying to use the dealer job number and visa versa. it a really best you both get your own job number for the dig. i make my cutomers call in to get their own number. you dont have to give your info to the first compnay you call. you can call many dealers and ask them all the same questions to see if your getting the same story . then also ask how many years they been doing satellite installs.ask for references and have them come out to do a site survey. see if you can get a blank copy of the current contract.dont sign anything until your happy the job is done and you've read the contract again. dish network does reserve the right to change the contract at any time. i still make mistakes and forget to explain something every once in a while. but i always try to inform the customer.
