I have been renting with Dollar for years . . .but never again. On a recent trip to Tampa, FL I rented a car from Dollar and was offered the pre-pay option to purchase gasoline. Knowing that I wouldn't be driving enough miles to use a full tank, I declined . . . I then asked the attendant what the price per gallon to refill would be in the event I didn't bring the car back full and she stated it would be $4.00 per gallon. As I was returning to the airport, I passed several stations where the gas was $3.78 per gallon and I figured since the cost was only 22 cents more, I would forego the stop and just let them fill it up. To my surprise, they charged me $8.95 per gallon or almost $150.00 for gas . . . I would have taken the time to stop for gas had I known they would charge more than twice the going rate for gasoline! Stating that I signed a contract that said that I would pay that amount (in the 'fine' print). I complained because their attendant had given me a figure of $4.00 per gallon but they didn't care . . . and they apparently didn't care that I was a long-time customer of theirs, either. When I spoke to the custome service representative, she was rude, would not transfer me to a supervisor, and hung up, stating there was nothing she could do. I am warning all renters with Dollar that it does not matter what you are told, read every detail of the contract (I didn't since I was told what the price would be) and don't rely on the information provided by the attendant. Corporate was no help since they stated that the Tampa location can charge whatever they want.
