Federal Government Grant Processing Center scam attempt claiming they represent the government Las Vegas Las Vegas Nevada

I received a call this morning, from a person who identified himself when I asked as John Norven. He spoke with an accent, perhaps indian or middle eastern. He told me the government had researched me and wanted to give me an $8000 grant. I asked why and he sidestepped the question. It further developed that there was a fee of $257.00. Then he said he needed my bank account number so that they could collect their fee in ten days. When I said I wouldn't give out my account number until I had checked this out to verify that it was legitimate, he hung up.

I got online and did a search and found this site, with several reports of this exact scam. These people are claiming they represent the government, isn't that illegal? Shouldn't someone be prosecuting them??
