I am a 33 yr. old female, no accidents in 13 years, an occasional speeding ticket once every 3 or 4 years, and I am paying $1052 every six months. After reading your letters, now I know why.

Strike 1: I work in the construction industry as a carpenter.

Strike 2: I let my insurance lapse for 1.5 years because I didn't have my own car to drive since it had died on me. I was driving my parents vehicle covered by their insurance.

Strike 3: I filed credit card bankruptcy 2.5 years ago.

I just bought a new car in Aug. 2002 (a bank approved loan at 8.9% with a co-signer) and recieved my new insurance quote, up 544.00 from the liability insurance I was carrying on a 94 olds.

Newer, safer, more reliable...I foolishly thought my insurance wouldn't go up quite so much. When I read the letter they sent me asking for an extra 181.00 for 2 months of coverage, the way it was written I was under the impression my insurance was only going up to 544.00 for 6 months, boy was I ever wrong.

I have already gotten quotes from other internet accessible insurance companies and they are more than 50% less than Geico. I will be changing companies. The sad thing is, after reading all these articles...I feel so discriminated against.

#1 UPDATE EX-employee responds

Lapse of Insurance always results in higher rates

AUTHOR: Rick - ()

POSTED: Wednesday, November 20, 2002

I am a former GEICO employee and a licensed insurance agent (220) in Florida.

With every insurance company I know of, a lapse of insurance will ALWAYS result in a higher premium when you first get a new policy. Due to the lapse of coverage, which means you have no documentable insurance history to determine if you have had accidents (accidents are not listed on motor vehicle reports in most states) or other claims, you are almost always in a high risk category at first.

Once you have established coverage with one company, you will probably find that most companies no longer place you in a high risk category if all other factors are good, and rates will be much lower.
