August of 2014 I purchased a portable dishwasher< GE Model, GSC3500D35WW. We used it for several months from time to time finding dishes on the top rack not getting cleaned. It took some time to identify this since there was differences in the kind and amount of residue that needed washed off of dinnerware. Eventually I called their service department as it became clear that there was something wrong with the unit that with a great deal of consistence, 50% or more dishes on the top rack weren’t getting cleaned. The department you call for service offered several suggestions to remedy the problem like check water pressure and temperature of the water, none of which helped. After about two months of chasing their suggestions I asked for a service call. When the service man came out, he diagnosed the problem as the pipe that delivers water to the top rack didn’t match up with the receptacle it was supposed to hit, so he ordered a new sprayer unit and top rack and asked me to call when the parts arrived.

I called him back and he compared the new top rack with the existing rack and since they were the same, he took the rack and said he would get back to me. A month and a half later I called looking for the serviceman and there was no record of him returning so they started a new call. When I asked what happened to the prior serviceman they said when he came back, he canceled any further action on my complaint and because it was over a month ago, they had no more information to give me.

Well at this point I’m not very happy and it showed as I talked to the service schedulers. This is when they told me of a corporate policy that if I say anything in the presence of their serviceman that he doesn’t like, he will leave and GE will no longer service my equipment even if it’s under warranty.

So a second serviceman came out when the reorder of the parts (we already know won’t fix it) came in. he replaced the parts and left which is all the scheduling people said he would do even though we knew it wouldn’t fix anything, again dirty dishes. Another service call and the guy said the reason the dishes don’t clean on the top rack is that there is no sprayer under that rack, they depend on water from the sprayer under the bottom rack to clean the top rack. I asked how they expect the spray to get through pots and pans or a heavy load on the bottom and he said it was a problem.

Now having the testimony of their serviceman that not having a sprayer under the top rack was a problem the service department insisted on having another serviceman come out to fix it since the issues wasn’t closed out. So I ran a load the night before with a typical load on the first rack and when the serviceman opened the front and looked at what was in it and where, he closed the dishwasher and said he can’t help me and left.

I called GE Service and told them that there was clearly a serious design flaw and asked how they could possible expect dishes on the top rack to get cleaned from under the bottom rack. They told me to consult the Owners Manuel and see the loading instructions which I suppose tells you, you can’t load pots and pans on the bottom rack which means you can’t wash pots and pans as there isn’t enough room on the top rack to fit a pot. Since the machine has a Pot Scrubber cycle, I assume they are at least giving the illusion you can wash pots and pans but apparently that’s not true.

I insisted they take the machine back as I did consult my attorney about my $600.00 dishwasher that doesn’t clean dishes and there was no defense for their inadequately engineered appliance and a refund was the least that could be expected with the documentation of another appliance repair shop. GE’s solution was that they would generously offer me a discount on another appliance. This means I spent $600.00 on a dishwasher that doesn’t wash dishes and get to grace GE with another purchase and have two dishwashers. You’ve got to be kidding me.

This dishwasher is so poorly designed, I can’t believe they sell it let alone defend that piece of junk. Fortunately I bought it at Lowe’s and they agreed to take it back and replace it with a Whirlpool portable that has a top sprayer. Now that’s how to satisfy customers.

I thought it a weak defense being told to read the instructions on how to load the machine. I’ve successfully used dishwashers now for more than 40 years and I’ve never heard of one that you can’t put pots and pans in. I think if that’s an issue, it ought to be on the sign in the showroom. “You can’t wash pots and pans along with anything on the top rack”.

That was the very last GE purchase I’ll ever make, especially since a serviceman can blackball you and decline to service your equipment even if under warranty. I wasted day’s responding to GE’s requests to keep sending servicemen to my residence in an attempt to have them get water to spray through pots and pans to clean dishes on the top rack. They just wouldn’t admit, like the service man did, that the dishwasher wont clean dishes on the top rack.
