Chips = snake oil...

They never do as claimed. Now the exception is for a race engines where there were modifications performed and the vehicle for example uses a laptop to change/adjust parameters based on many factors/conditions such as temperature, humidity, fuel type, gear ratios, tire diameter internal/external engine modifications etc..well not anything a daily driver needs to contend with to get the best mileage and performance. To note...race engines are rarely covered under warranty.
The ECM/PCM that came with the vehicle is designed so the vehicle can have the best possible compromise of fuel economy, performance and longevity. You mess with one system without dealing with the others..you are only asking for trouble and making the scammers richer. Hence the reason GM and possibly others will void a warranty if they find out any of these "chips" were installed.
Unless this "chip" came with a handheld device, or software/internet connection for programming parameters etc...it was a scam.

The truth about chips

Not all chips are snake oil.
The problem is that while not all are, some are, and the ones that aren't make changes to small to be felt or noticed.
The makers of these chips have found that North American auto manufacturers err on the side of safety in two areas, poloution control and engine durability. To improve fuel economy and not violate polution control legislation or lower life of your engine they can eat into these margine and produce statisticly significant improvements.
That means they can prove them, but you will never notice them at the pumps or through the seat of your pants.
So if you belived the hype, sorry not going to happen, but if you measured the horse power and kept close enough records you could have probably proved the improvement, tiny as it was.

Magic chips

There is no magical chip that you can buy that will give you both increased power and better mileage. These are the 21st century versions of snake oil. Think about it. If a simple programming change to the ECU would result in better gas milage and more power, wouldn't the factory have programmed it that way?
The goals of more power and increased mileage should have been the tipoff. In order to make more power, you must burn more fuel, which would consequently reduce mileage.
