I have had an IPass account for over 5 years and due to my error I caused myself to accumalate violations. I was unaware of the process and my minor violations quickly escalated. They were originally under 100 and quickly escalated to 3,000 and 20,000. I tried fighting these fines but was unsuccessful. I was given 2 settlement amounts. One for 240 for the 3,000 and 800 for the 20,000. They both went to collections and I paid the one for 240 and tried to make payment arrangements for the 800. I was told no. I continued to call and I did agree to pay but I couldn't afford the entire 800. Today I finally got the money and I was told due to policy changes I know owe 20,000 for a 150 maybe less original fine. They are suspending my ipass account which is in good standing because of policy changes. Insane!! The entire 2 years I have been dealing with this now policy changes won't allow me to pay 800. Finally when I have the money and I can pay the settlement amount it changes. I trully believe they are stealing from the poor. I know I owe them but not this outrageous amount. $20,000 is insane! I need help and they are not giving it to me. It is not fair that the government can steal our hard earned money. What else could they steal from Us?

Deal directly with the collection agency

AUTHOR: UmmHmmYeah - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, October 23, 2012

A collection agency should be more motivated to offer you a settlement than the tollway. It appears that your account didn't have funds at the time of the violations which is why they expect you to pay the fines & fees. Typically, IPass customers only have to pay the amount of the tolls. Let them know that you know that already. The only recourse the state now has is to suspend your plates and/or license. That hardly ever happens, so keep calling & trying to get a reasonable settlement. Explore different tricks the collectors use to get you to pay to your advantage, ask about a hardship discount, discounts for people on welfare, disability, SSI, etc. These programs don't exist but collectors will offer them to you as a way to make you feel like they are cutting you a deal. Trust me, they have negotiating power, it's limited, but they have it. Ask for a payment plan & call during the last 2 days of the month when collectors are hard pressed to meet their goals. Catch them when they are desperate, remember, all calls are recorded so they must honor their arrangements. And always hold out for a manager or supervisor that can offer a deeper discount.

HI,

I am in the same boat as you.  I am trying to find an attorney to help me with this matter.  If you get anywhere please let me know. I cannot afford the outrageous fees that they have assessed to me!

Thanks!

What did you do to originally get the $150 or less violation, and how in the world did it get up to $20,000..in only two years.

What error did you make that caused you to rack up $20,000 in fines?  That's a lot of errors.

Just curious.
