On March 5,2003 a sales person came to our house to tell us about ther pools. When he came in we sat down at the table to talk about the different pools he had to offer. He went through all the pools and their guarantees.

We made our decision on the Sea Isle with a deck. We ask him what all that included and he told us all we would need to do is provide the eletric close to the pool. He also told us it would only take them 8hours to install the pool and then we could swimm in it in 4hours. He said they would contact us one to two days before they would come to set up the pool. He also said that we would have our pool in by the first of April.

At the end of March my wife called Island Pools to see when they were coming out. The lady that answered the phone told my wife that they were behind 4-6weeks due to all the rain which was understandable, but the workers will be in contact with real soon.

On April 4,2003 Roy (the installer) called us to set up a time so he could come out and see where we wanted our pool. He was suppose to come on the 5th but called and said he was stuck in traffic and couldn't make it that day. Then he called back and siad he would be at our house on Thursday April 11 and that he would call my wife at her work so she could come home to show him where the pool was to go.

When she got there he told her they were going to put the pool up that day. She ask he if they also brought water and he said no. So she call Island Pools to see what was going on. She talked with Kelly and she told her that water is not included. My wife said but that is in our contract and Kelly said well can you pay for the water and then we will reimurse you. My wife said no that's not what we agreed to in the contract.

Then Roy called my wife later that day and said that they would have to finish the pool on Friday April 12,2003 because we could't get water at the last minute. He told us his workers would be there a 7:00A.M. and would be ready for water at 9:00A.M. Could we make sure the water was there so they could finish with the liner. So we made arranements to have water at our house at 9:00A.M. My wife called her work to let them know she would be late because they were finihing the pool and someone had to be home. At 7:00A.M. no workers at house. 8:00A.M. still no workers so my wife tried to call to cancel the water because she knew they would have the pool done by 9:00A.M. But the man was already on his way to get the water to bring to our house. Finally one of the workers called my wife at 8:45A.M. and said they wouldn't be able to come because his daughter had to go to the emerancy room.

My wife ask the worker was he going to pay the water man to sit and wait for them to get done because he will be here in 15 minutes? Then he put Roy on the phone, Roy said can't you just call the water man and tell him to come out later and my wife said no he will be here in 15 minutes. She asked how come no one called before now and his response was "well that was the last thing on their minds to call you."

He then said they would be done with the pool around 3:00 P.M. and someone would have to be there to sign the completion papers. My wife said they would have to wait until 5:30P.M. until I got home from work because she couldn't miss any more time. His response was "I can't have my workers waiting around for 3 hours waiting for you, it takes them 3 hours to get home."

Then they called my wife at work and told her that they had a problem with the liner and they would have to put a new one in but not today(4-11-03). They would come back 4-20-03(Easter) around 9:30A.M. or 10:00A.M.

Kristin told my wife she knew that was Easter but they wanted to finish the pool, so my wife said ok. Then on 4-20-03 we got a call at 9:30A.M. from Kristin that they were not coming and I told her I want my pool finished today. She didn't want to hear it and so I hung the phone up. Then Roy called back and told me that they would be there on Monday and I told him no you promised that you were going to finish it today and I want it finished.

His respose was that it was to wet and I told him it did'nt even rain here. He said well if I come up there and it's wet we won't be able to to anything anyway. And again I told him I want my pool finished like you promised me. They never showed up. They came 4-21-03 when no one was home and left trash everwhere and didn't instrust us on how to use the pump. And didn't call to let us know they were coming either.

I called Island pools to tell them what was going on and they told me that I had to call the manfactor and I told them no you do because I bought the pool from you not the factory.

Called factory about being instructed on the pump and they wanted to tell me over the phone.I told them no they were suppose to show me and I would like someone to come out to show me.Ted from the factory said he would put a work order in and they should be out there in 2-3 days. Well that was 4-23-03 and still no one has come out. And now Island Pools won't return my calls either. Left message on 4-26-03 telling them if someone didn't call back that they wouldn't get the rest of their money for the pool.

This problem is still going on.

Texas Pool Man

AUTHOR: F - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, June 14, 2006

Your reply to this persons complaint is unwarranted as this is an above ground pool, not an in ground. His pool was installed from a kit normally in one day and whether he paid a down payment or not was his choice alone as they offer 100% financing. I feel sure you took the time to reply because you share the same common pool name and do not want to be confused.

If it was financed as most are then the lender pays the pool company upon him signing the installation acceptance statement. Pool liners need to be filled the same day of installation to prevent shrinkage as well the company can say, hey the pool was filled and usable when we left as a backup to get their check from the lender, however unless the salesman took advantage of this man it's uncommon to fill any above ground pool in Virginia unless it is written in the contract. Above ground pools are not paid in 1/3 stages as constructed pools can be. It is like taking an order and the installation price is included.

How it all works

AUTHOR: F - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, June 13, 2006

Being an ex independent sales contractor for this company, I have much knowledge of the ownership as well how it all works. What this is are sales people that borrow or get money and buy into a pool delearship with USA Industries pools.

Island Pools background is from sunroom, window, home improvement sales with no prior pool knowledge. The owner is Ted and his wife Kelley operate the business as most are Mom and Pop companies.

During the time of your complaint there were as many as 5 salesmen contracted with Ted, however for several reasons all quit. Frank was a off and on again salesman that answered the phone. Betty is a Rehash sales person that goes behind their own salesmen that do not sell, and sells over the phone or in person for far less than the salesman is allowed to. There are no ethics in this business. For me the reason was, just like you, they do not care about their own people and you had to track Ted down to get a paycheck. There are NO employees. Roy is a pool installer that as well installs the same pools for Dooley Pools and Tropical Pools. If Roy wants a pay raise, he simply charges the companies more and knows the salesman will be hit with it. They all share his services as well is most likely why you had to wait so long for installation. In most cases the sales rep has little knowledge what goes on after the sale and if asks is told his job is to sell pools and they handle the rest. The sales person is paid on a Par basis, or a bottom line what that pool cost him. Often what happens is when the rep is paid they deduct all these extra installation charges and claim Roy or other installers charged them, so they will split with you that extra cost, however try to prove these extra charges, you can not, or the actual charges if any.If they spend more in advertising, they simply decrease the salesman's commissions to pay for it.They will overhire as well so they can handle all the calls in season, make alot more profits and stop advertising around mid August mostly. Often Island does not even show up for appointments, even after they confirm them. The installer does not want to get any permit or be asked questions, that's why all the run around. They pass the buck. These companies try to pre qualify you if possible (run your credit) before they come out. They can use an old or another company name to check it so when you see it was checked you have no idea they ran it.It is perfectly normal to pay a down payment on any pool. If you finance a pool, it is a home improvement loan that is normally attached to your property and must be paid off when you sell it. The pool company finds a lender and they determine your terms. The pool company is not paid until you SIGN THE INSTALLATION COMPLETION STATEMENT the installer hands you. Of the 3 named compamies, none are current members of the BBB. Tropical Pools of Goldsboro NC,last I checked was kicked out of the NC BBB for non compliance in responding to complaints. Check it yourself. All 3 of these sales companies share the same installer, don't you think they all know each other and each others prices and sales tactics? If they cheat their own sales force, how do they look at you? These people care about one thing and that's how much they can get out of your wallet, anyones. A salesman that's smart and sells well,as well is a later threat for he learns and becomes maybe a future competitor. There is no honor among thieves, so you better get all you can now..sorry to say. Some people can't sell the simple truth and that's what most sell to their own salesman the shine, not the truth.

How not to get tangled with pool builders

AUTHOR: Donny - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, July 16, 2004

I am President of Island Custom Pools in Texas. Not affiliated with any pool builder in Va.

First of all don't ever pay in advance for any construction work no matter what you are told by the builder. If the builder can't start you project and bill you on a phase level of work, then you best find someone else. Any reputible pool builder will not ask for advance money and would complete work in a timely manner because he does want to be paid.

Again, If you pay up-front, then expect to be ripped off. It is as simple as that. Up front pay request from builders is your RED RED RED flag about using that company (builder).
