Today, 11-7-08 I stopped at a Just Brakes located on Hills borough Ave. in Tampa to ask what vehicle's qualify for their "$99 Brake pads and machining of rotors". Since I drive a 2005 Ford F-150 i assumed I would pay more but they told me my truck also qualifies for the same deal.
I told them that I had a vibration in the break peddle and that was my main concern, not so much the pads since they were replaced in Jan. of 2008. They told me that if I had 20-30 mins. they would put my truck on the lift and perform a "routine inspection" and let me know what the issue was. I said "no! I don't have that kind of time, that I was just inquiring" and I left the store.
After realizing it would only be 20-30 mins to find out what the issue is, I returned and allowed them to to their "inspection" (Which really seemed like a ploy to get my brakes apart and leave me held there with no way to leave unless they put my truck back together with "NEW" parts!)
Once they got my truck on the lift, all four wheels off, all four calipers, brakes and rotors off they told me my front calipers needed to be rebuilt because Ford uses substandard parts that wear out quickly.
They quoted me over $1,000.00 and I said, "absolutely not! put it back together and I'll drive it home" They then gave me the impression that since it was apart they couldn't put it back together the way it was.
They then lowered their price to just under $800.00 and I again insisted that I did not have the means at the time and to just put it back together, again they argued... By this time, It's me alone against four "Technicians" including the manager.
I was insistant that my truck be put back together when the "manager" found a way to lower the price to just under $500.00. I reluctantly accepted and they did the work...
Do my brakes still have a vibration? YES! Did i feel preasured? YES! Am I satisfied? NO! Would I recommend Just Breaks? HELL NO!

Brake vibration

AUTHOR: Mimsy - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, January 24, 2009

Vibration when braking is caused by either "hot spots" or warping of the brake rotors. Hot spots occur when sections of the rotor distort slightly from the heat of braking, and the vibration is usually noted after rotors are warm/hot.(after driving a while).
Solid rotors can often be lathed (turned) to shave a bit of material off to smooth them out. Vented rotors should NEVER be turned; this will cause them to warp.

Calipers rarely need replacement although operations such as this will tell you otherwise. Bad calipers will stick;causing pad on one side to wear more than other, or not engage, causing less wear than the pad on the other side. If someone tries to sell you calipers; ask to see them and and brake pads! Brake pads need to be replaced at 3mm thickness. Ask to see them and measure them in front of you if you don't feel comfortable with the diagnosis.

I have a 25 year background in automotive service, and hate to see people ripped off like this. It occurs far too frequently.
