Salesman knocked on the door, told me that they could reroof my house with ZERO out of pocket expense. After being reassured numerous times that they would not come back to me saying that I owed them money after the job was done, I agreed to let them do it. I guess my first red flag was when they came and wanted to get the check the day I received it, I refused and they agreed to getting paid after the roof was on.

The job was done and I gave them the check I received from the insurance company as agreed to in our contract. At this time I thought that our relationship was ended. A couple of months later, I came home to an invoice on my door from Kraft Roofing about some "supplemental billing for deck repair". The invoice said the repair was "approved by the insurance company". I called the salesman and he said not to worry about it that it was just for the insurance company. A few more months go by, again I had thought that our business deal was over, and then one day I receiived a telephone call from a David from Kraft Roofing. He said something about an outstanding balance for the above mentioned deck repairs. I explained to him the deal I had made with his salesman, that according to our contract, the job would be done for the amount of the check that I received from the insurance company. He said that this was typical, it was just a "supplemental billing" that is done on all jobs. I referred him to my insurance agent.

Again, four or five months go by and I had heard nothing from neither Kraft nor my insurance company. I thought the deal was finally over. Around April of 2013 I was sent another invoice in the mail. I called the Kraft Roofing Office and again talked to David, the billing agent. I once again explained that this was not part of our contract and that I was tiring of this thing resurfacing every few months. I again referred him to my insurance agent and asked that this be the end. I had done everything in my control to appease their requests, and they always seemed satisfied with my remedies.

On Aug 1, 2013, some 14+ months after the job was completed, I received a certified letter informing me that Kraft Roofing had filed a mechanic's lien on my house. I was flabbergasted. I thought I had done everything I could do to prevent this very thing from happening. I had had the salesman write into our contract that the job would be done for the agreed price of the scope of the insurance settlement. Somehow, my worst nightmare of agreeing to this door to door salesman roofing company had come to fruition.

I called Kraft Roofing and was able to speak to the owner of the company, Joe Kraft. He told me that I had stopped the insurance company from paying the supplemental billing and that he was now billing me for the outstanding balance. I asked him about the contract that we had agreed to. He assured me that this "supplemental billing" had been approved by the insurance company. I then called my insurance company to see what the deal was. My insurance agent informed me that when Kraft Roofing submitted the claim that he had asked for documentation of the repairs they were billing for and that they had never done so. He too thought that Kraft Roofing was finished with the job. I also received a detailed copy of the invoice Kraft Roofing had submitted.

I, myself, have worked in the residential construction business for the last 35+ years, contracting for the last 25. I have extensive knowledge in almost all aspects of building. I was also home the day that they did the reroof. Kraft Roofing had billed a total of 312 square ft of deck repair. From being inside the house while the job was being done, I knew that there was no way that they could have removed and replaced that much decking, so my curiosity got the better of me and I decided to climb into the attic to see if I could identify exactly how much decking they had actually replaced. I was dumbfounded at what I had found. True, they had repaired a few spots of decking(that was not approved, nor put into writing like their contract specified), but I found numerous other spots that should have been repaired if they had indeed repaired 312 sq ft. I found maybe 40 sq ft that had been repaired. I also found spots that had gaping holes, 4"-5" wide, that were right on the next rafter span they had repaired. I took pictures of this mess and sent them via email to Joe Kraft. Suddenly his whole attitude towards me had changed, and he agreed that the job was unacceptable.

He was somewhat apologetic but the immediate recourse that I wanted was the lien removed. Not just released, but completely removed as if it had never happened. This lien really bothered me, as a matter of public record, a release of the lien would look like I was a deadbeat and just resolved the lien by paying it only because I was made to when I had done everything I could to take care of the situation. Joe Kraft wanted to send someone to fix the decking that I had documented in the pictures. After I balked, he offered to come repair the decking and offered me $300 of the outstanding $1200 supplemental claim if I approved the resubmission of the claim to the insurance company. I refused, as I had read that legally he would have had to file his lien within 12 months of completing the job and I didn't want him working on my house and have the ability to reopen the job after well over a year of initial completion.

I contacted a lawyer and had him send a certified letter to Joe Kraft demanding that the lien be removed. about three weeks ago I was told by my lawyer that the lien had been removed, but I am still awaiting the paperwork from him.

Today, Nov 5, 2013, I received another call from the insurance adjuster telling me that Kraft Roofing had once again submitted the same invoice. I called Joe Kraft and was told that it was a "mistake". I cannot believe that this will not end. The stress and anguish is really starting to wear on me.

Kraft Roofing renamed to Pro Star Roofing

AUTHOR: blackwaterfrog - (USA)

POSTED: Tuesday, August 18, 2015

This is what happens when homeowners get involved with contractors who do not know what they are doing. Half of all roofing companies are out of business in less than 5 years. Do your homework and research the company and the owner in detail. And do not rely on BBB as your sole source. There is much more to the story than BBB.

Pro Star Roofing is not involved in these complaints

AUTHOR: Jason Simms - (USA)

POSTED: Wednesday, April 22, 2015

I am the owner of Pro Star Roofing. I have been made aware of the complaints against Kraft Roofing and my company name tied to one of them. However, I am not Kraft Roofing. I am not associated with them at all and these complaints are not lodged against me. If you read the text of the complaints you can see Kraft Roofing is mentioned several times but Pro Star is not.

Please consider this when making your decisions.

Thank you

Jason Simms
