Purchased magicjackplus from local Radio Shack. Once you insert it into your computer in order to activate your phone number is requested and then come the fees:  $20. to keep your same phone number and if your want to buy an additional year for $29.95.  Clicked yes to both, paid with my credit card and now I have an account.  Attempted to set up the magicjackplus as a stand alone as advertised and after many attempts and chats with customer service it was found to not be compatibly with the modem of my current internet provider.  Returned to Radio Shack and they returned my money $85.07. Reconnected the cord back to old provider and found no dial tone.  Contact Customer: they stated because I did not use the 30 days free trial offered on the internet I get no refund of $52. and today had to pay 31.44 to get my port/phone number back.  This is clearly a rip-off.  You are deterred in each step trying to cancel and you are held hostage until you figure it all out and accept the charges to allow the return of your telephone port.  The key point: Keeping your home phone number is not stated you are moving your port to magicjack. for seniors citizens on fixed incomes this is a costly scam.

Actually Magic Jack does not own the number it belongs to the user who is registered on the account. If he decides to port the number to another carrier the number still belongs to the registered user on the account. Magic Jack does state they can charge a port out fee. But Magic Jack can not legally block the release of the number if you chosse not to pay their port out fee. If they do file an FCC complaint. Here is the rules on the porting requirements.

Fees and charges

  • Companies may charge their customers fees to recover the costs that they incur in providing number portability. Ask the new company whether it charges any number portability fees and whether those fees can be waived.
  • Companies may not refuse to port a number because a consumer has not paid for porting.
  • Once you request service from a new company, your old company can't refuse to port your number, even if you owe money for an outstanding balance or termination fee; however, you are still obligated to pay any unpaid balances or fees, if applicable.

If they refuse to release your number due to not paying their port out fee than file a complaint with the FCC or you can ignore their port out fee request.

Youre wrong, this isnt a scam. They neither know nor care that your a senior and on a fixed income. EVERYONE has to pay to keep a number period. You dont "own" the number. Its a convinence that is offered to you. As its the PHONE COMPANIES who own the number, they in essence have to buy it from the phone company for you to keep it. Theres more on the technical side but I wont go into it.

Once again the consumer refuses to see past thier own petty issues to attempt any level of understanding. They are a business. As such there are costs for doing business. Why would you expect that you could keep your number for free? Did you expect that you were going to have to pay NOTHING?? Or were you expecting that MagicJack would eat any and all costs just so you could have a phone service at $20 A YEAR!! I understand cheap, but really thats even low for cheap ppl.

As you are a senior this shouldnt be new information to you. THERE AINT NO SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH!!
